Boston College bounced back from its season-opening loss to the Miami Hurricanes to capture a 34-3 win over Maine in Week 2, as the school hits the road for the first time during the 2012 college football season. “We took some steps forward in areas, but to be perfectly frank, we have 10 tough games coming up,” stated Eagles coach Frank Spaziani. The Eagles will be playing Saturday’s opponent for the fifth time in school history, with just a single victory in the series. Boston College is 2-5 ATS after a two-game homestand the last two-plus seasons.
The Eagles were expected to take a step forward this year after returning 98.5 percent of their offensive yards from 2011, which definitely showed in racking up 537 total yards versus the Hurricanes in the season opener. Boston College ran 85 offensive plays in that contest, which was the most for the program since 2007. The team is a dismal 11-30 all-time against Big Ten Conference opponents, but has gone 49-12 in non-conference action since 2000.
Northwestern is off to its sixth-straight 2-0 start, as it scored underdog victories against the Vanderbilt Commodores and Syracuse Orange. The Wildcats took a major step forward defensively in last week’s contest, holding the Commodores to just a single touchdown in a 23-13 victory. “I think the defense played outstanding,” stated Wildcats running back Venric Mark. The program is the only one in the country to capture two wins over BCS-conference squads to start the season. Northwestern is 4-8 ATS at home the last two-plus seasons.
The Wildcats are one of only 16 teams in major college football to keep its entire coaching staff intact from 2011 to 2012. Northwestern is hoping to continue to get great production out of Mark, as he’s one of the best pound-for-pound options in the nation at the position. Quarterback Kain Colter has won four of his five career starts, completing 62.2 percent of his passes for eight touchdowns and two interceptions.
Sports bettors will likely back the Eagles due to their 4-0 ATS mark on the road, while the Wildcats are 16-35 ATS following a straight-up win.
