Florida Atlantic opens the 2014 season facing two teams ranked in the nation’s top 25, as it looks to bounce back from a 55-7 setback to the Nebraska Cornhuskers as 20.5-point road underdogs last week. The Owls last 40-7 at Tuscaloosa in 2012 in these schools’ only previous meeting, which can’t be ignored when looking over the college football odds page. Florida Atlantic is 2-0 ATS as underdogs of 31 or more points since 2012.
The Owls are expected to be led offensively by quarterback Jaquez Johnson, who completed 6 of 12 passes for 34 yards and also gained 19 yards on the ground against the Cornhuskers. Defensively, Florida Atlantic had three players record nine tackles in its season opener, with senior leader Andrae Kirk being part of that group at linebacker.
Alabama is ready for its home opener at Bryant-Denny Stadium, as it looks to build off a 33-23 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers as 22-point neutral-site favorites at the Georgia Dome in Week 1, which is important to consider when making your college football picks Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide had six players make their first career starts in that affair, including Blake Sims with his first go around under center—throwing for 250 yards and completing 72.7 percent of his passes. Alabama is 2-6 ATS as favorites of 31 or more points over the last two-plus seasons.
The Crimson Tide have plenty of weapons for Sims to target in the passing game, as they return 77.9 percent of their receptions from a year ago. Wide receiver Amari Cooper is the main player to watch, as he was the returning pass catcher with 45 grabs for 736 yards in 2013. Since the start of the 2009 campaign, no defense has allowed fewer touchdowns than the Crimson Tide, with head coach Nick Saban watching opponents hit pay dirt just 92 times on the offensive end.
Sports bettors will likely back the Owls due to their 4-1 ATS mark as road underdogs of 21.5 or more points since 2012.
