NEW MEXICO

New Mexico put up some gaudy stats in their home opener, but then again, they were playing Southern University. Demarcus Rodgers ran for 103 yards and a TD, while Freshman QB Cole Gautsche scored two TDs of his own, as New Mexico rolled to a 66-21 victory.

The Lobos scored 38 points in the second quarter alone. That figure was as many as they scored in the final six games of the 2011 campaign. So, optimism is running high headed into this matchup against nationally ranked Texas.

Gautsche had 88 yards on 8 carries, one of which was a 47 yard TD run. Chase Clayton had a game highlight, as well, returning a kick off return for a 98-yard TD.

TEXAS

The Longhorns came up big against Wyoming last week, winning 37-17, but remained relatively unchanged in the rankings this week, clocking in at 17th after being 15th last week.

The Longhorns did it on the ground. Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown both ran for 100+ yards and combined for three TDs. QB David Ash didn’t commit many errors with the football, and that eased the concerns of Texas coach Mack Brown, who didn’t commit to Ash as the starting QB until training camp.

Ash had way too many interceptions last year and remedied it this year by attempting shorter passes. He fumbled a snap, but was otherwise near flawless.

The 280 rushing yards for the Longhorns ranked 17th in the nation last week, while their 37 points put them at 40th ranked. Improving their pass offense (only 156 yards) may not be that crucial if they are going to consistently get big games from Bergeron and Brown.

New Mexico Betting Trends:

Lobos are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall, 5-1 ATS in their last 6 following an SU win, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs the Big-12, 2-10 TS in their last 12 in Sept, and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 on turf.

Texas Betting Trends:

Longhorns are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 after accumulating more than 200 rushing yards in previous game, 5-2 ATS in their last 7 following an ATS loss, 7-16-1 ATS in their last 24 at home, 1-6 ATS in their last 7 vs teams with winning records. 0-4 ATS in their last 4 on turf.
