The Syracuse Orange opened its season with a 24-0 Week 1 victory over Liberty. Week 2 sees the Orange travel to face Maryland as 1.5-point underdogs to the Big Ten foe. Maryland also won its Week 1 matchup with a 79-0 stomping of Howard. NCAA football oddsmakers have set the over/under at 58 points for the affair which will kick off at 11 AM CST on ESPN. Syracuse carries a No. 21 AP ranking into this matchup but finds itself dogs on the road.
SYRACUSE
Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito was not without his struggles in the victory. He completed less than half of his passes (17 of 35) en route to 176 yards with no TD passes while throwing two interceptions. The Syracuse backfield made up for it with 192 yards, including 89 from Moe Neal, 49 from Abdul Adams and 32 from Jarveon Howard. All three had touchdowns, as well. Neal caught another three passes for a team-high 54 receiving yards, and Adams added two catches for 29 yards.
Taj Harris had one catch for 31 yards, as Syracuse averaged 10.4 yards-per-reception in the game. Sean Riley also lost one fumble and Josh Black and Kingsley Jonathan both fumbled (but Syracuse recovered those). The Orange certainly had its blemishes for a game it cruised to an easy 24-0 victory in, and it will need better focus to avoid the three fumbles and two interceptions that could cost it against a much tougher opponent in week 2.
MARYLAND
Maryland rolled over Howard. Josh Jackson threw 15 of 24 for 245 yards with four touchdowns and no picks. Jake Funk rushed for 79 yards and a TD, while Tayon Fleet-Davis added another 79 yards. Maryland rushed for 317 yards on the game with a 6.6 yard-per-carry average, and Anthony McFarland Jr rushed six times for 18 yards but had two touchdown rushes. Dontay Demus Jr caught three passes for 100 yards including two touchdown receptions. Maryland had five TD catches, with 17 total catches for 18-yards-per. Its offense was nearly flawless and Howard only managed 68 total yards on the game. It was a dominant performance but Maryland is hoping to turn things up against its first AP ranked opponent this week in the Orange.
