PURDUE
Purdue slaughtered Eastern Kentucky last week 48-6. It was accomplished by the means of Robert Marve passing for a career high 295 yards and matching his career best with three TDs. The Boilermakers had 372 total passing yards, good for 8th in the nation last week. The 6 points surrendered ranked 9th.
Marve wasn’t even supposed to be a starter, but Caleb TerBush was suspended for the game for a violation of team rules. Marve hadn’t had a three-TD game since 2008 when he was a starter for Miami.
The Boilermakers surrendered only 190 yards and 10 first downs, while forcing four TOs.
Brooklyn Fox forced three of the four TOs with two INTs and a fumble recovery.
NOTRE DAME
Notre Dame won 50-10 in a huge game for the program that took place in Dublin, Ireland last week. 49,000 fans showed up, but most were visiting Americans, and it was the first US college game in Ireland since 1996, when these same two squads squared off.
The Fighting Irish destroyed the Navy through the run. Theo Riddick ran for two TDs and had 107 yards on 19 carries, while Atkinson had 99 yards on 9 carries.
Cierre Wood missed the last game, and will miss this week’s too, due to a violation of team rules.
Everett Golson looked good in his first start at QB. He said he “(thought he) was comfortable,” which is a good sign for the Fighting irish. He is only a sophomore and spent last season as the scout QB, which should have prepared him for this task of starting. He’ll start again this week against Purdue.
Golson said the coaches told him to “(just) relax” and that he would “make mistakes, but make them going full speed.” That confidence could translate into big things for the Irish, who sit at No. 22 in both the AP poll and the USA Today poll.
Golson finished 12 of 18 for 144 passing yards, but looked great while scrambling. He had a bad interception when he threw it into double coverage in front of the Navy 4-yard line, but otherwise had a pretty solid performance.
