The big games from week 2 didn’t produce the upsets many people predicted – Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Alabama all played well and covered the spread. However teams like Kansas and James Madison scored some shocking upsets against big name teams. And when was the last time a conference got its butt kicked the way the ACC did this past weekend? Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech – all ranked teams – fell on Saturday.
The week 3 opening lines are up. Check out our college football betting lines page or reference the table below to get a look at where spreads are sitting. Here’s a small sampling of some of the bigger match-ups for the week.
Georgia (-2.5) vs. Arkansas – This line has seen some early movement. The game started as a pick but has moved up to Georgia favored by 3 points but then bet back down to 2.5 points. Georgia is coming off a hard fought loss at South Carolina. The importance of A.J. Green became more apparent when the Bulldogs lined up against a tough SEC opponent. Green will be out for this game too, but will be back next week. Georgia needs its primary playmaker back. Arkansas won again last week, 31-7 over Louisiana-Monroe. But the score is deceiving; the Razorbacks got a game effort from a lesser team. Arkansas was up 7-0 at halftime and 14-0 going into the 4th quarter. They can’t afford another slow start when they do battle between the hedges.
Nebraska (-4) at Washington – The road Huskers opened as 3 ½ point favorites, but most books have hopped up to 4 or 4 ½ points. Nebraska is 2-0 with home wins over Western Kentucky and Idaho. Playing at Husky Stadium is going to be much tougher. Freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez has been spectacular thus far. If not for Denard Robinson’s tremendous performances, more people would be talking about T-Magic. The Husker defense is rock solid. Washington followed up its loss at BYU with a nice win over Syracuse at home. Jake Locker threw for nearly 300 yards and 4 touchdowns. Jermaine Kearse hauled in 179 receiving yards and 3 tds. This will be a real test for the Cornhuskers.
Oklahoma (-18) vs. Air Force – The Sooners opened as 16 ½ point favorites with books now listing the game at 18 or 18 ½ points. The Sooners answered their critics with a thorough beat-down of the Florida State Seminoles, 47-17. The Sooner D gave up only one real touchdown. The offense was as good as advertised. Landry Jones led the way with 380 yards passing and 4 touchdowns. Air Force is coming off an impressive victory over the BYU Cougars. The triple option attack, led by quarterback Tim Jefferson, racked up over 400 yards. Will the Sooners be disciplined enough to handle the machine-like offense of the Falcons? The last time Oklahoma played a Mountain West school was BYU in week 1 of last season, which they lost 14-13.
TCU (-21) vs. Baylor – The line opened with the Horned Frogs as 21 point favorites and hasn’t moved. TCU rolled Tennessee Tech last week, 62-7. This is a home game for TCU, but it’s also an in-state battle. The Baylor Bears aren’t expected to contend for the Big 12 South title, but quarterback Robert Griffin III will probably be the best player on the field. His ability to run and throw will be a unique challenge for the Horned Frogs’ defense. But Baylor’s defense is going to have a tough time slowing down an underrated TCU offense.
Auburn (-6) vs. Clemson – The home Tigers opened as a 6 ½ point favorite over the road Tigers, but the line has come down to 6 points. This is a solid SEC-ACC match-up. Auburn snuck out of Starkville, MS with a 17-14 win over Mississippi State. Clemson hasn’t played anyone yet, having beaten North Texas and Presbyterian easily.
Iowa (-1 ½) at Arizona – The Hawks open as 1 ½ point road favorites and a couple books have moved up to 2 points. Iowa is underrated. Their offense is potent and their defense is phenomenal. I’d put Iowa’s front 4 up against any other front 4 in the country. But Iowa has beaten Eastern Illinois and Iowa State at home. Now they have to travel a long way to Tucson, Arizona to play the late game against a fast, talented Wildcat team. Arizona hasn’t played anyone, either; they’ve beaten Toledo and the Citadel going away.
