College Football Handicapping: Week 4 Totals Analysis

Look for Oregon and Arizona State to go over the posted total of 54 on Saturday evening
Miami at Pittsburgh (49): The total has come down from 51 , and it might be safe to think these Big East teams might play it close to the vest. But the Hurricanes have average 34.5 points a game and the Panthers have averaged 31. Miami has given up 20 points a game, while the Panthers have average 21. Pittsburgh is averaging 355 yards offense, while giving up 351.

Bowling Green at Michigan (58): The Wolverines have been a scoring machine, averaging 33 points a game. And they need to score that much because the defense is averaging giving up 23.7 points a game. In the past two games, the Wolverines defense is averaging 30 points a game. Bowling green is averaging 342 yards offense and 70 plays a game, while their defense has given up 466 yards and 82 plays a game. That adds up to scoring and plenty of it for these teams.

Georgia at Mississippi State (46 ½): Both defenses has posted some good numbers as Georgia has given up an average 18 points a game, while Mississippi State has given up 17.7 point game. Mississippi State has given up 283 yards and only 58 plays a game. Georgia is in the same category, giving up 305 yards a game and 59 plays a game. Offensively, Georgia averages 341 yards, while Mississippi State averages 361 yards.

Central Florida at Kansas State (45): Kansas State has been good offensively, scoring an average of 35 points a game and gaining 412 yards. Their rushing game has powered the offense, averaging 259 yards. Defensively, they have given up 23 points a game. Central Florida may be able to match them offensively, gaining 356 yards a game, while giving up only 262 yards a game and 15 points a game.

Alabama at Arkansas (55): This is the classic matchup of an outstanding defense and a good offense when Alabama takes on Arkansas. The total is a healthy 55.  Alabama has given up only 13 points a game and 253 yards a game. But they will face a big challenge with Heisman candidate Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett. The Razorbacks have averaged 368 yards passing a game for a total of 484 yards a game and 35 points. The Crimson Tide have been equally effective on offense, scoring an average of 44 points 542 yards offense. Most of that came on padding their stats against Duke and San Jose State. Against Penn State, the Tide scored 24 points.

Stanford at Notre Dame (59): The Cardinal comes into the with some impressive numbers, scoring an average of 51.7 points a game, while gaining 475 yards on 67 plays a game. Defensively, they have given up only 13.7 points and 228 yards a game. Notre Dame has had a little tougher time scoring, averaging 26 points. They have gained some yardage, averaging 451 yards. On defense, the Irish have given up 24 points a game and 444 yards a game. Notre Dame averages 73 plays a game, while the defense averages 77 plays. Those are high numbers and tend to lead to more scoring.

UCLA at Texas (42): UCLA has had trouble scoring, averaging 17.7 points. They are averaging 204 yards rushing and only 100 yards passing a game. The Bruins are trying to shorten the game, which tends to limit scoring. Texas averages 30 points a game, while th defense gives up 12.7 points.

Nevada at Brigham Young (64): The Wolf Pack have been impressive this season, scoring an average of 50.7 points, while giving up 20.3 points. They have accumulated 560 yards per game. BYU has been known for offense has not lived up to the billing this year, averaging 15 points a game and 303 yards offense. The Cougars defense has been shredded for 28 points a game and 433 yards.

Kentucky at Florida (50): The Wildcats have posted 44 points a game, gaining 497 yards a game. Their offense has been balanced, gaining 242 yards rushing and 255 yards passing. They have given up only 18 points a game on 258 yards. The Gators have averaged 34 points and gained 317 yards per game. On defense, they have given up 14 points and only 277 yards. In the last three seasons, the over is 2-1.

Oregon at Arizona State (54): This game has gone over the past two seasons. Statistically, it would appear to be heading that way again. Oregon has scored 63 points a game and gained 612 yards. On defense, Oregon has been equally impressive, giving up 4.3 points and 193 yards. Granted, two of their opponents (Portland State and New Mexico) were not much to speak about. Arizona State has scored 38 points and given up 16.3.

South Carolina at Auburn (46 ½): South Carolina has scored an average of 32 points a game and given up 12.7. The Gamecocks have averaged 66 plays a game given up 63 plays. Those tend to limit scoring. Auburn averaged 64 plays a game, and gives up 78 plays a game. But the Tigers average 460 yards a game and 32 points.
