With the start of college football season, there is no preseason to gauge how a team looks. It’s important for college football handicappers to have the right information and know which team will start off hot or cold. There are a lot ways to analyze the season. From statistical review to how many starters are returning. But like the old saying a fish rots from the head down, it may serve a person to take a look at some of the coaches who have a lot to prove or a lot of pressure. The Big 10 seems to have a lot of coaches facing the wrath of their alumni.
When it comes to wrath of the alumni, there is no better place to start than with Ann Arbor, Michigan. Rich Rodriguez has lost 16 games in two seasons with the Wolverines and that has not sat well with the alumni.
“I’ve got thicker skin now. I’ve got alligator skin,” he said in a published report.
He better have thicker skin. With the NCAA watching them for violations and the lack of bowl games, another bad season and it will be his last at Michigan.
Ron Zook: The Illinois coach has struggled the past two seasons. After taking the team to the Rose Bowl in 2007, nothing has clicked right. Zook has replaced coordinators, but he needs to post a winning season.
Tim Brewster: The Minnesota coach has had one good season in the past three, and with a new stadium to fill, he has little margin for error.
Bill Lynch: He has had two losing seasons in a row in Indiana, and without any signs of improvement, he will be on the hot seat.
Besides looking at coaches in trouble, it may also be beneficial to check out some of the high-profile coaches who are starting out their first seasons.
Brian Kelly: The most pressure will be on Kelly, taking over Notre Dame. The Irish were not happy with former coach Charlie Weis, so Kelly will have some leeway, but he needs to show that Notre Dame is back on the track for improvement.
Jimbo Fisher: Florida State is eager to regain their glory days and Fisher is taking over for Bobby Bowden. Fisher needs to prove the administration right for making the move to Fisher.
Tommy Tuberville: He takes over at Texas Tech and winning will be the only way for some of the fans to forget former coach Mike Leach.
