The dogfight of the week will be more like a pack wild dogs as Cal travels to face Nevada. You may not have a dog in the fight, but the over looks very tempting. It’s a huge number (66), but a look at the game shows why the number is so high. Cal has averaged 52 points a game the first two weeks and 436 yards off offense. Nevada has averaged 50 points a game and 352 yards offense. Both teams are going to put up some numbers, so it’s reasonable to think that they will both get into the 30s. WOUNDED DOGS
Brigham Young at Florida State (-10): Both teams took hard losses last week with Florida State getting run over by Oklahoma. BYU suffered a similar fate at the hands of Air Force. Being home, the Seminoles will be better apt to lick their wounds and come out firing against a BYU team that has some questions on defense. Florida State averaged 400 yards of offense, but failed to convert that number into points. The Cougars defense gave up an average of 477 yards.
BIG DOGS
Southern Cal (-12) at Minnesota: The Gophers were beaten by South Dakota. Southern Cal has averaged 426 yards on offense and shows no signs of slowing down. Minnesota allowed South Dakota to score 41 points. Southern Cal should as least match that.
Air Force at Oklahoma (-17): The Falcons posted an impressive victory over Brigham Young, but step up in talent this week against Oklahoma. With a one-dimensional offense, the athletes of the Sooners should prevail. Oklahoma is averaging 39 points and 454 yards on offense. The Falcons are averaging more than 500 yards of offense, but have not played a team the caliber of Oklahoma.
Texas (-3) at Texas Tech: Beware of the home dog, especially in a tight game. Both are undefeated after two weeks. Neither team has played a quality opponent, so this will be the first big test for both squads. Two years ago, the Red Raiders pulled off the upset at home.
Ohio at Ohio State (-31): The Buckeyes have not covered the large spread against the Ohio the past two seasons. Do not look for Ohio State to keep up the pace to cover the spread at the end of the game.
SICK PUPPIES
UNLV at Idaho (-7): The Rebels lost by nearly three touchdown in their first two games, but face a 7-point spread. Unless the Rebels can generate some steady offense, it will be hard for them to cover any spread. Their defense has given up an average of 39 points a game.
