Coach Turner Gill leads his Jekyll and Hyde Kansas Jayhawks into Hattiesburg to take on Larry Fedora and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Both teams are 1-1 to start the season and are hungry for a victory.
After an embarrassing loss at home to FCS North Dakota St 6-3 to start the season, the Jayhawks rebounded in a big way by upsetting Georgia Tech 28-25. The Jayhawks were a double digit underdog at home against Tech and pulled off the upset, mainly due to the defense doing a good job containing Yellow Jacket quarterback Joshua Nesbitt. Nesbitt threw for 116 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 33 yards and two more touchdowns. The Yellow Jackets did rush for 291 total yards, but that is to be expected with the triple option. The Jayhawks continue to have problems on offense. They only gained 320 total yards. Quarterback Jordan Webb threw for 179 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception. The Jayhawks rushed for141 yards, led by James Sims with 101 yards and a touchdown. Sims did not playin the opening loss to North Dakota St. If Sims can be productive running the ball it might help the Jayhawks open up the passing game and improve the dreadful offensive numbers. Against Georgia Tech the Jayhawks employed a shotgun offense and sometimes even ran a no-huddle. the offense is improving every week.
Souhtern Miss Opened the season getting thumped by South Carolina 41-13 but rebounded by devouring cupcake Prairie View A&M 34-7. The Golden Eagles were up 31-0 at halftime, and cruised to victory. USM held the Panthers to 211 total yards and forced 2 turnovers. On offense quarterback Austin Davis threw for 178 yards, a touchdown and an interception. The strength of the Eagles offense was the rushing game, which accounted for 253 yards and three touchdowns. It was a running back by commitee for USM but Kendrick Hardy led with 86 yards. Wideout DeAndre Brown had 5 catches for 100 yards and a touchdown.
These two teams played last year in Lawrence with the Jayhawks winning 35-28. Both teams need a victory before conference play starts. Hattiesburg is always a tough place to play. Southern Miss is 19-2 straight up in their last 21 September home games. The weather is expected to be hot and humid with gametime temps in the 80’s. The Eagles were banged up against Prairie View missing running back Tracy Lampley and also receivers Johdrick Morris and Quentin Pierce. All three hope to play against the Jayhawks but bettors will want to keep an eye on the situation. It will be interesting to see which team shows up for the Jayhawks this week. Was the game against North Dakota St an aberration or are the Jayhawks putting their offensive woes behind them and improving every week? Both of these teams have pretty good defenses, and have the potential for great offenses. It should be interesting , and a nice warm-up to the Saturday games.
