Both South Florida and Florida started off with wins against lesser opponents last week. South Florida destroyed Stony Brook 59-14 and Florida won 34-12 against Miami-(OH) but didn’t look very good in doing so. This week the Bulls make the short trip from Tampa Bay to Gainesville to take on the Gators. Despite the schools only being a two hour drive away from each other, this is the first time they have ever met on the football field. Last Year the Bulls went into Tallahassee and upset Florida St. They hope to repeat that success in Gaineville against the Gators.
As mentioned South Florida trampled Stony Brook 59-14. Coach Skip Holtz was happy to get the win in his debut as South Florida coach. The Bulls had a balanced attack throwing for 383 yards and 3 touchdowns while rushing for 180 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback B.J. Daniels played until late in the third, but threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns and he rushed for another before being replaced by Bobby Evald. Marcus Shaw rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown to lead the rushers. The Bulls did lose two fumbles but it didn’t really matter as the score was so lopsided. The Bulls defense was dominant against the pass giving up only 112 yards and forcing 4 interceptions, including one ran back for a touchdown. They gave up 142 yards on the ground, but again it didn’t matter that much. The Bulls also added a blocked punt for a touchdown as well. The Bulls are still pretty young, though they are talented. they baby Bulls will have to grow up in a hurry against powerful Florida.
Florida started sluggishly last week against Miami-(OH). The Gators fumbled the ball 8 times and lost 3 of them. Going into the fourth quarter the Gators only had 26 yards of total offense and led 21 to 9. They broke the game open in the 4th quarter to win 34-12. Quarterback John Brantley looked ordinary in his debut replacing the legendary Tim Tebow. He threw for only 113 yards but did throw 2 touchdown passes. The running game wasn’t much better though Jeffrey Demps did rush for 98 yards and a touchdown. The Gators defense really won the game, as they were pretty dominant to offset the sluggish offense. They only allowed 212 total yards and no touchdowns. The Gators only gave up 4 yards rushing something college football handicappers should take note of. They also recorded 4 picks, including one returned for a touchdown, and two sacks. This week will be an interesting test for the Gators. we will see if last week was an aberration for the Gators against a much stronger defense. Or perhaps Florida’s offense isn’t good or South Florida’s defense is really that good. either way it will be interesting .
The weather will be hot and humid with temps in the low 90’s and a 40 percent chance of rain. What else would you expect in the Swamp?
