The first USA Today College Coaches Poll for the 2007- 2008 NCAA football season is out and USC has landed on the top of the heap, and it is quite a heap.
The Trojans will feature Heisman Trophy candidate John David Booty at QB. The top 25 poll looks like this:
1) USC
2) LSU
3) Florida
4) Texas
5) Michigan
6) West Virginia
7) Wisconsin
8) Oklahoma
9) Virginia Tech
10) Ohio State
11) Louisville
12) California
13) Georgia
14) Auburn
15) Tennessee
16) Rutgers
17) UCLA
18) Penn State
19) Nebraska
20) Arkansas
21) Florida State
22) TCU
23) Boise State
24) Hawaii
25) Texas A&M
The poll includes three PAC-10 schools—USC, California and UCLA. The SEC, perhaps the most powerful conference, is well represented by a total of six schools! Fifty percent of the conference’s teams are in the initial top 25. The clubs are LSU, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee and Arkansas.
Four of the clubs are from the 11-team Big Ten—Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State. The Big 12 is represented by Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas A&M. The ACC has only two teams at present in the first 25—Virginia Tech and Florida State.
The Big East has only eight teams in its conference but West Virginia, Louisville and Rutgers are all represented. TCU hails from the Mountain Conference, while Boise State and Hawaii are part of the Western Athletic Conference.
Schools you might have expected to see include Notre Dame, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Wake Forrest, BYU and Southern Miss. All of these clubs got votes but not enough to make it to the Top 25. Boston College and Georgia Tech both received 150 votes, putting them 59 votes behind number 25 team Texas A&M, which got 209 votes.
In comparison, first-place USC received 1,481 votes and number two LSU got 1,372 votes. That’s a long way to number 25 and an even longer way to where BC and Georgia Tech are presently.
Of course not a game has been played. The college football season kicks off starting August 30. That week, number one USC will play Idaho. Look for the Trojans to be 1- 0 after that contest. Their next game is versus Nebraska two weeks later. No predictions on that one. At least not yet.
