Kansas St is a 7 1/2 point favorite at home against Texas Tech Saturday in a battle of top 15 teams. The Wildcats are led by Heisman favorite quarterback Collin Klein.

The #14 Texas Tech Red Raiders and #3 Kansas St Wildcats meet for the 13th time Saturday in Manhattan. Texas Tech leads the series 8-4 but Kansas St won 41-34 last year in Lubbock. The loss snapped a 5 game winning streak in the series for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders have won the last two games in Manhattan, but they haven’t played there since 2008.

Texas Tech is 6-1 overall this season and 3-1 in the Big 12 under coach Tommy Tuberville. The only loss for Texas Tech came at home to Oklahoma 41-20. The Red Raiders have home wins over Northwestern St 44-6, New Mexico 49-14, and West Virginia 49-14. Texas Tech has road wins over Texas St 58-10, Iowa St 24-13, and last week at TCU 56-53 in triple overtime. The Red Raiders are 6-1 ATS and the total is 3-3. Texas Tech was 2.5 point underdog at TCU and the total was 57.

Texas Tech is averaging 516.1 yards per game on offense, including 361.7 passing yards and 154.4 rushing yards. The Red Raiders are #11 in total offense and #4 in passing. Tech is outscoring opponents 43-22 this season. The Red Raiders are in the top 35 nationally in both points scored and allowed. Texas Tech is -1 in turnovers. Texas Tech is averaging 67 penalty yards per game. The Red Raiders are 55/101 on third and fourth down conversions, and 32/36 scoring in the red zone with 27 touchdowns. Tech has given up 11 sacks this season. It isn’t surprising to see the Red Raiders have a top ten offense, but most fans are shocked at how well Tech is doing on defense so far. The Red Raiders are #8 in total defense nationally allowing just 282 yards per game, including the #11 pass defense giving up 170.6 yards, and 111.4 rushing yards. This is despite giving up 516 total yards and 53 points last week in the TCU game. Texas Tech opponents are 55/101 on third and fourth down conversions, and 18/20 scoring in the red zone with 12 touchdowns. Texas Tech has forced 11 sacks and 10 turnovers this season.

Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege has completed 189/267 passes (70.8%) for 2,209 yards with 28 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He has been sacked 9 times. Running back Kenny Williams has 68 carries, 423 yards, and 3 touchdowns, along with 8 catches, 75 yards, and a touchdown. Eric Stephens, Jr. has 65 carries, 423 yards, and 3 touchdowns, along with 11 catches for 35 yards. SaDale Foster has 62 carries, for 315 yards and 2 touchdowns, along with 6 catches for 37 yards. Six Texas Tech receivers have at least 16 catches and 172 yards. Tight end Jace Amaro has 23 catches, 394 yards, and 4 touchdowns. He is probable with an chest injury. Darrin Moore has 34 catches, 377 yards and 8 touchdowns. Eric Ward has 30 catches, 356 yards, and 8 touchdowns. Javon Bell and Jakeem Grant all get significant catches as well. Bradley Marquez is out for the season with a knee injury.  Texas Tech has a ton of depth at receiver, but that will be tested with so many injuries.

Kansas St is 7-0 and 4-0 in the Big 12 under coach Bill Snyder. The Wildcats are the only undefeated team in the Big 12, and one of only 11 undefeated teams left in the country. Kansas St has home wins over Missouri St 51-9, Miami-(FL) 52-13, North Texas 35-21, and Kansas 56-16, along with road wins at Oklahoma 24-19, Iowa St 27-21 and last week at West Virginia 55-14. The Wildcats are 5-1-1 ATS and the total is 3-3. K-State was a 3 point underdog in the West Virginia game and the total was 73.

Kansas St is averaging 434.9 yards per game, including 201 passing yards and 233.9 rushing yards per game. The Wildcats are outscoring teams 43-16 this season. K-State is in the top 15 nationally in rushing and scoring offense. The Wildcats are +7 in turnovers for the season. Kansas St is 43/78 on third and fourth down conversions, and 35/40 scoring in the red zone with 27 touchdowns. The Wildcats have only allowed 5 sacks this season, which is remarkable when you consider how much quarterback Collin Klein runs with the ball. Kansas St is allowing 325.9 yards per game on defense including 226.4 passing yards and 99.4 rushing yards. Kansas St has struggled to stop the pass, but they are in the top 15 nationally against the run and in points allowed. Wildcat opponents are 45/111 on third and fourth down conversions, and 18/26 scoring in the red zone with 11 touchdowns. K-State has 18 sacks this season and has forced 16 turnovers.

Kansas St quarterback Collin Klein has completed 98 of 139 passes (70.5%) for 1,397 yards with 10 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He is also the second leading rusher with 110 carries, 551 yards and 14 touchdowns. He might have become the Heisman frontrunner with his performance Saturday night against West Virginia. Running back John Hubert has 114 carries, 658 yards, and 8 touchdowns, along with 8 catches for 26 yards. Back-up quarterback Daniel Sams has 22 carries, 189 yards and 3 touchdowns. Receiver Tyler Lockett has 22 catches and 391 yards and 3 touchdowns, along with a kickoff return for a touchdown. Chris Harper has 25 catches, 354 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Tramaine Thompson has 19 catches, 302 yards, and 3 touchdowns. He also has a punt return for a touchdown.  Travis Tannahill has 10 catches, 147 yards and a touchdown.

Texas Tech is 5-0 ATS after scoring more than 40 points, 6-1 after allowing more that 450 yards, and overall, 5-1 after passing for more than 280 yards, 4-1 after a straight up win and an ATS win, against teams with winning records, in road games, and on fieldturf, 8-3 after allowing 40 points or more, 5-2 in road games against teams with winning home records. Texas Tech is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 against Kansas St.

Kansas St is 3-0-1 ATS after a straight up win, against teams with winning records, and overall, 12-2 after gaining more than 450 yards, 6-1 after allowing less than 275 yards, 4-1 after allowing less than 100 rushing yards, and on fieldturf, 7-2-1 after allowing less than 20 points, 20-6-1 in Big 12 games, 3-1-1 after scoring more than 40 points, 9-3-1 after an ATS win, 18-7-1 in October, 7-3 at home, 41-20-1 after a straight up win of more than 20 points, 2-7 after passing for more than 280 passing yards, and 2-8 at home against teams with winning road records. The last 4 games in this series have gone over the total.

This is the most difficult game Kansas St has left, and if they can get by a good Texas Tech team, the Wildcats have a good shot of running the table. But it won’t be easy. Texas Tech is vastly improved from last year, especially on defense. I see Kansas St with a close game at home, in a potential shootout.
