No. 1 Clemson is 8-0 after defeating N.C. State last week on the road. It had blanked Miami the week before and drove Al Golden into retirement. Previous wins against Boston College, Georgia Tech, then-No. 6 Notre Dame, and Louisville have helped the team race to its top ranking. It will host Florida State today on ABC at 2:30 CST.
Last week Deshaun Watson threw 23 of 30 for 383 yards and five TDs, to go along with rushing 54 yards on 14 attempts with another TD. RB Wayne Gillman rushed for 172 yards on 31 attempts and he caught three passes for 19 yards. There were six receiving options with 30 yards or more in the game, paced b Hunter Renthrow with 93 yards on four catches and one of the five receiving TDs. Charone Peake had 64 yards on three receptions and a TD, as well.
Watson has thrown for 1,936 yards on 219 attempts this year (8.84 yards per attempt) on a 70.3 percent completion clip. He has 20 TD passes and seven INTs and a passer rating of 168.3. Artavis Scott leads the team with 47 catches for 514 yards and four TDs. Deon Cain has 322 yards on 16 catches and Peake is No. 3 in yardage with 273 yards and three TDs. Renfrow has 247 yards on 15 catches and two TDs.
Gallman has had a good season out of the backfield, with 874 yards on 159 carries and seven rushing TDs. The 6’1” 205 pound back is a sophomore and last season he rushed for 769 yards and four TDs. He has rushed for 100 yards or more in five games this year, and has caught seven passes in the past three games.
Florida State is 7-1 and will get its first matchup with a ranked opponent this week in Clemson. Last week the Seminoles defeated Syracuse 45-21 to bounce back from its lone loss to Georgia Tech the week before, 22-16.
In the victory over Syracuse backup Sean Maguire threw for 348 yards and three TDs while posting a quarterback rating of 84.1 Jacques Patrick rushed for 162 yards on 24 attempts with three TDs in the game. Travis Rudolph caught for 191 yards on five receptions with three TDs as well.
FSU QB Everett Golson had to sit out with a concussion last week but is expected back this week. He has thrown for 1,659 yards on 67.2 percent completions with 11 TDs and just one INT on the season. Dalvin Cook has rushed for 1,037 yards on 127 carries (8.2 yards per) with 11 TDs. Patrick has 174 yards on 30 carries with three TDs.
Travis Rudolph is the top WR with 501 yards on 35 catches and six TDs, including a 75-yards TD pass. His best game was the Syracuse contest and has given him the team lead in yardage; he had just 109 yards in the three weeks combined.
