The Miami Hurricanes season went south fast after beginning the year 4-1. Tough games against ranked opponents like Notre Dame and Florida State, and some tough conference games quickly took a season that was looking promising and turned it into mediocre soup. Now the Hurricanes sit at 6-5 and they’ll close the season out against the 6-5 Duke Blue Devils.
Junior QB Stephen Morris has been impressive this year for Miami, though, and should be even better next year as a senior. He’s posted a QB rating of 132.7 and thrown for nearly 3k yards on the season, with a 58.1 percent completion ratio. He had his most impressive game in the win over NC State, when he threw for 566 yards on 26-of-49 passing.
Morris also hasn’t thrown an interception in the last three weeks, and his game last week against South Florida was particularly impressive, as he completed 65.6 percent of his passes and rushed for an additional 87 yards, posting a QB rating of 205…his highest of the season. Morris will give Duke’s defense a lot of problems as a good dual threat quarterback. Morris’ arm has the Hurricanes ranked 30th in the nation in passing yardage with 285.5 yards per game.
Duke has really struggled the last few weeks, but understandably so. With two games against ranked BCS opponents, they were outscored 104-27 by FSU and Clemson, and then they lost to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets last week, 42-24.
Duke’s offense has been good all year, but it has decreased significantly in the three losses. After beginning the season 6-2, things have just fallen apart, taking the Blue Devils out of ACC contention. Last week against Ga Tech, they managed just 275 yards and only 15 first downs. Georgia Tech also controlled the ball for roughly 2/3rds of the game, and went for 449 yards, 330 of which were on the ground.
Their challenge will be different with Miami this week, but college football oddsmakers expect much the same result, another loss, favoring the Hurricanes by nearly a touchdown in this showdown between ACC squads.
