Virginia Tech rolled against Duke two weeks ago, defeating the Blue Devils 41-20 to improve their ACC record to 2-1. It fell back to .500 last week with a loss to then-No. 19 Clemson. The Tigers soundly defeated the Hokies 38-17 at Clemson.
The Hokies lost the game badly despite generating more yardage than the Tigers. The Hokies had 406 total yards and more first downs, but were unable to convert in scoring range.
Junior QB Logan Thomas had a huge game, throwing for 207 yards on 15 completions, while rushing for an additional 99 yards. He had one TD throwing and one rushing, but posted a somewhat low QB rating of 113.2 due to his two interceptions. He’s thrown an interception in the last six Hokies games, after not throwing any the first two (against Georgia Tech and Austin Peay).
The Miami Hurricanes have suffered three straight losses since their big upset win over ACC rival NC State. With a 41-3 loss to Notre Dame, an 18-14 loss to UNC, and a 33-20 loss to Florida State, the Hurricanes have come crashing back to Earth, and are now .500 on the season, though they have a 3-2 record in the ACC. They had a bye week last week, and will look to get back on track against Virginia Tech, despite college football oddsmakers setting the line a point in favor of the Hokies.
Stephen Morris remains the key for the Hurricanes this season. He has 2,214 yards on the season with ten passing TDs. Running backs Duke Johnson and Mike James have both rushed for over 400 yards and have five touchdowns a piece. The Miami offense has been good, but save the 1814 loss to UNC, they gave up an average of 37 points to their other two opponents (ND and FSU) in this three game losing streak.
