The Maryland Terrapins have continued their defensive dominance—but they still can’t score. After holding both NC State and Boston College to 20 points, they still dropped the last two weeks on the heels of an offense that can’t get much going in the air or on the ground. The Terrapins rank 85th in passing yards (209.1 per game) and 119th in rush yardage (91.4) per game, and their struggling offense is why college football oddsmakers predict they will get their third straight ACC loss this week against Georgia Tech.
In their defense, they are starting their fourth string quarterback. CJ Brown, Perry Hills, and Caleb Rowe are all out for the season. Rowe just tore his ACL and has left the Terrapins in dire straights now.
But it doesn’t help that the Terrapins running game has been so bad. Hills is easily preyed upon because teams know the Terrapins aren’t going to generate much on the ground. They only have one back with any kind of production this year, Wes Brown, who has carried it 81 times for 344 yards while scoring two TDs on the year. Justus Pickett has scored three TDs, but hasn’t produced much overall yardage, with just 142 yards on 65 carries.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have dropped four of their last five, though, so the Terrapins can smell blood. Last week, Georgia Tech lost badly to BYU, giving up 41 points, one week after holding Boston College to 17. Their defense’s inconsistency could pose a problem against Maryland, even if the Terrapins aren’t exactly stacked on either side of the ball. They gave up 411 yards to the BYU Cougars last week, and they gave up over 600 yards to Clemson two weeks ago.
In the loss to Clemson, the Yellow Jackets gave up 397 passing yards and allowed Tajh Boyd to compete 26-of-41 passes, for an average gain of 9.7 yards per pass. Their secondary is going to have to be much more on point against Maryland, because the Terrapins will look to exploit the pass game against Ga Tech.
