SMU is 3-2 in AAC play and will look to improve to 4-2 with a win over South Florida on the road, the Mustangs are 4-point favorites in Tampa according to college football oddsmakers at Bovada.
The Mustangs have had one of the most successful pass offenses in the ranks this season, with 380.1 yards per game, good for fifth in the nation. The team generates just 101.4 yards per game via the rush, but the offense is still successful and SMU has averaged 32.4 points per game this season. The biggest problem for the 4-5 Mustangs has been a defense which has surrendered 38.1 points per game.
Last week, SMU won 38-21 over UConn and the team defeated Temple and Memphis, too, having won three of its last four. Garrett Gilbert has thrown for 3,390 yards on the season with a 65.7 percent completion ratio and he has 21 TDs on the year to just six interceptions. The backs haven’t been wildly effective, but K.C. Niemchi averages 5.4 yards per carry on 34 attempts and Gilbert has rushed for 261 yards on 82 carries, as well.
South Florida has been a disaster offensively, and the team averages just 14.8 points per contest this season. The Bulls average just 159 yards via the pass and 103 by the rush, and the Bulls have been outscored by a totla of 92-36 the last three weeks against Louisville, Houston and Memphis. The Bulls will host No. 18 UCF next week before closing the season against Rutgers.
