Texas stops the bleeding; saves Big 12
The Texas Longhorn decided that the Big 12 is the better conference for them. Or maybe they just liked the money. Texas got an invite from the Pac-10 and said thanks – but no, thanks. They effectively stopped the bleeding before it really started. Yes, the Big 12 still lost Nebraska and Colorado, but the Longhorns’ decision kept the rest of the conference intact.
But at what price? Under the new Big 12 agreement, the Longhorns are allowed to start their own TV station, rather than solely be part of the conference channel. They – as well as Oahoma and Texas A&M – will also receive more money annually than the other schools in the conference.
The big three will reportedly get at least $20 million a year, while the other programs will receive anywhere from $14 million to $17 million. The Longhorns TV station will reportedly generate another $5 million per year.
Utah to Pac-10
The Mountain West thought it had made a step toward earning an automatic bid when they landed Boise State. Now they took a step back again when they lost the Utes to the Pac-10. The conference invited the school Wednesday, and school officials announced Thursday that the Utes will accept the invitation.
The Pac-10 is now up to 12 members and solidified its status in the world of college football. As for the Mountain West, they apparently drew the short straw. With the Big 12 still around and Utah gone, the conference is less likely to get an automatic bid.
USC to play Hawaii in 13th game of 2010 season
In addition to the two year postseason ban, the penalties imposed on the University of Southern California included a limitation to 12 regular season games per year. The game is USC’s opener on September 2 in Hawaii, and the game was in danger under the school’s restrictions imposed by the NCAA.
The NCAA decided it wouldn’t punish Hawaii for USC’s wrongdoings and will allow the game to be played. The 12-game restriction will be in effect for the 2012 season.
Bruins RB Knox transfers to Fresno State
Former UCLA running back Milton Knox announced Friday that he will transfer to Fresno State. Knox played in six games last season, and struggled to get significant playing time. He rushed for 134 total yards and caught two balls for 25 yards. He didn’t score a touchdown.
With Jonathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman already getting more carries than him highly touted Malcolm Jones and Jordan James coming in Knox had to make a decision. He picked the Bulldogs and will join the team for the 2010 season.
Masoli pleads not guilty, might get another chance at Utah State
Former Oregon Ducks quarterback Jermiah Masoli pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of one ounce of marijuana, driving with a suspended license, and failure to stop upon exiting a driveway or sidewalk. Masoli, who is serving a one-year probation from a second-degree burglary charge, was dismissed from the University of Oregon following the charges.
There has been talk that Utah State is willing to give the troubled quarterback another chance. The University is reportedly interested in adding the quarterback to their team. It is unclear if the interest is mutual.
