The San Jose State Spartans are 2-2 after its 24-41 loss to Air Force in Week 5. The Spartans had entered that affair 2-1 with victories over Northern Colorado and Arkansas and a loss to Tulsa in Week 2. The Spartans host New Mexico as 6.5-point favorites in Week 6, and the over/under is set at 64 total points according to college football oddsmakers. The game will kick off at 9 PM CST Friday night on CBS.

San Jose State ultimately was out-manned by Air Force. The Falcons rushed 69 times for 5.5 yards-per-carry en route to 382 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. Donald Hammond III threw 5 of 9 for 131 yards and another touchdown. Air Force outgunned San Jose State 513 yards to 378 in the game, and though San Jose State backup quarterback Nick Nash threw for two touchdowns in his seven throws, it was not nearly enough to keep pace with the Falcons consistently devastating rush attack.

Taven Birdow led all Falcons rushers with 124 yards and two touchdowns, while the Spartans’ rushing effort was guided by its quarterback, with Nick Nash rushing 11 times for 62 yards. Nash has proven a valuable tool this year for San Jose State.

The 6’1” freshman has completed 10 of 14 passes for two touchdowns while having rushed for 44 yards on five carries against Tulsa and the 82 yards against Air Force he achieved. He was something of a non-factor against Arkansas and North Colorado, but the Spartans are a better team with Nash involved in the red zone playmaking. Nash leads the team with 203 yards on 28 carries (7.3 yards-per-attempt), with DeJon Packer and Tyler Nevens ranking No. 2 and No. 3 in yardage at 155 and 115 yards respectively.

Tre Walker has been the top receiver with 230 yards on 18 catches, but he has not scored a touchdown. The team is led in TD catches by Derrick Deese Jr., a tight end, and Jermaine Braddock, who each have two TD catches thus far. San Jose State has scored seven touchdowns via the rush and it has caught for another seven.

New Mexico fell to 2-2 last week with its 10-17 loss to Liberty. It has defeated Sam Houston and New Mexico State and lost to then-No. 7 Notre Dame in Week by a 14-66 count. The Lobos are nearly a full-TD underdogs in Week 6 to San Jose State, and New Mexico is 0-2 on the road this year.

The Lobos have been successful via the rush this year but have had issues with its pass attack. Despite the team having 985 yards passing, it averages just 45.5 percent receptions between its three quarterbacks with none of the three averaging much better than 50 percent completions. There is also the fact the team has six intercepted passes to just four touchdowns. The rushing has been more prolific and consistent.

Top-two running backs Ahmari Davis and Bryson Carroll average 5.1 yards and 6.0 yards-per-attempt, with Davis having rushed 71 times and leading the team with four rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Tevaka Tuioti has averaged 8.1 yards-per-attempt on his 15 tries while Sheriron Jones has rushed 14 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns to rank No. 2 in rushing TDs from the QB position as well.
