The UCLA Bruins won its first game in Week 7 with a 37-7 victory over California. In Week 8, the Bruins host Arizona as 10-point favorites. The over/under is set at 57 points and the game will air at 9:30 PM (CT) on ESPN2.

UCLA

UCLA did receive the news it would be without its outside linebacker Jalean Phillips and its senior running back Soso Jamabo, both of whom were ruled out for the season due to concussion protocols. Jamabo had only rushed five times through six games, so it is a small loss. The loss of Phillips may hurt more.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson has thrown for 1,073 yards at a 60.1 percent clip with five TDs and three interceptions. His top two receivers have been Caleb Wilson and Theo Howard, who have caught for 335 yards and 287 yards, respectively, with three touchdowns between them. UCLA’s No. 1 rusher has been Joshua Kelley. He has rushed 73 times for an average of 5.9 yards-per-carry and has a team-high 433 yards and four touchdowns on the season.

Kazmeir Allen has rushed 28 times for 183 yards and a team-high 6.5 yards-per-carry, with a 74-yard TD rush to his credit. The Bruins have nine rushing TDs and five receiving TDs. Offensively, it is a poor team averaging just 21.5 points per game, and its defense has been weak too in allowing 31.5 points per game. The -10 point differential is not becoming, but it is fitting of a 1-5 team that is struggling just to stay in games. The Rush offense ranks No. 92 at 150.0 yards per game, and its pass offense is worse at No. 106 and 186.3 yards per game.

ARIZONA

Arizona is 3-4 with a 2-2 mark in Pac-12 play. It lost 10-42 to Utah last week, and it defeated California the week prior 24-17. Richard Rodriguez will get the start at quarterback with Khalil Tate out this week due to an ankle injury. Rodriguez has been good. He has thrown 26 of 45 for 275 yards and a TD, but Tate will be missed. The hope is that RichRod can continue to feed Shawn Poindexter. The No. 1 WR has caught 24 passes for 446 yards and two TDs. Shun Brown and Tony Ellison have both caught for 300-yards plus with three touchdowns apiece.

The backfield has averaged 4.7 yards-per-carry, and Zona’s top two backs both average better than five per-carry. JJ Taylor has 663 yards on 118 attempts with three touchdowns, while Gary Brightwell has rushed 62 times for 322 yards and two touchdowns. Tate is a dual-threat QB with 112 yards and two touchdowns, but Rodriguez has just five carries for a total loss of 19 yards.

The Wildcats will miss their starting quarterback and fall in a game that may be closer than the 10-point spread. Even with the loss of its QB this week, Zona has some good players at its skill positions and Rodriguez is a capable backup quarterback who should keep this affair somewhat closer than oddsmakers project.
