The Atlanta Falcons lost 18-12 in Week 1 to the Philadelphia Eagles, and following that loss it will try to get back on track in its home-opener in Week 2, a clash against Carolina at Noon (CT) on FOX. Atlanta enters as 7-point favorites in the affair, with an over/under set at 44 points by NFL oddsmakers at bookmaker 5dimes.
Week 1 was difficult for Falcons QB Matt Ryan. He completed just 21 of 43 passes with no TDs thrown and an interception. Additionally, he was sacked four times for a total loss of 26 yards. The Falcons were equally unsuccessful with its ground game, mustering just 74 yards on 18 attempts, though garnering one TD via the rush at the hands of Tevin Coleman, who had just 19 yards on his nine attempts.
Superstar wide receiver Julio Jones had another monster game at WR, with 169 yards on 10 catches, but he was targeted 19 times and Ryan also committed one of two Falcons’ fumbles in the game, though his fumble was recovered. Philly was meanwhile getting the most of its mere 232 total yards, as Jay Ajayi rushed for two TDs in his 15 carries and that helped offset Foles’ zero TD passes.
The Carolina Panthers opened its season with a 16-8 victory over the Dallas Cowboys to start the 2018 season 1-0. Cam Newton threw 17 of 26 for 161 yards but failed to record a TD pass, and he was sacked three times for a loss of 15 yards. Newton also led the Panthers in rushing yards, though, with 58 yards on 13 carries and a TD. Alex Armah added the other rushing TD via a 1-yard carry, his only of the day.
Christian McCaffrey was mildly successful with 50 yards on 10 carries, though he also did not score a touchdown. The Panthers got another 45 receiving yards from McCaffrey, and Devin Funchess caught three passes for 41 yards, as well. Carolina averaged 9.5 yards per pass attempt, but it still did not score via the air.
Look for Newton to mix it up with more pass plays in Week 2 against the Falcons, as Carolina tries to milk more from its wide receiving core. Defensively, the Panthers did limit Dallas to 94 rushing yards, and Ezekiel Elliot was held to 69 yards on his 15 carries.
