Two of the NFL’s oldest rivals meet for the 176th time Monday night as the Green Bay Packers host the Detroit Lions. Green Bay is 4-3 and Detroit is 3-4. Both teams are looking up in the NFC North standings to the 6-2 Minnesota Vikings.
Green Bay leads the series 100-68-7 against Detroit. The Packers have won four of the last five games against the Lions including both meetings last year. Green Bay won 34-27 at home and 31-24 in Detroit last season. The teams will meet in Detroit on New Year’s Eve to close out the regular season. These teams have been playing since 1930.
Detroit is coached by Jim Caldwell. The Lions started off the season 3-1 but have lost three straight games since then. Detroit has home wins over the Arizona Cardinals 35-23 plus road wins over the New York Giants 24-10 and Minnesota Vikings 14-7. The Lions have home losses to the Atlanta Falcons 30-26, Carolina Panthers 27-24 and Pittsburgh Steelers 20-15 last Sunday night. Detroit also has a road loss at the New Orleans Saints 52-38. Both of these teams have issues and I don’t think either one will make a serious run to catch the Vikings. The Detroit offensive line is in shambles because of injuries. Green Bay’s isn’t much better, and they are not a good team without the incredible Aaron Rodgers playing quarterback. I like the Packers to win a close game though with their running game.
