The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets improved to 2-0 after a 35-10 Week 2 victory over Mercer. Week 1 saw the Yellow Jackets squeak by Boston College. Now attention turns to the Vanderbilt Commodores with Tech favored by 7-points at oddsmaker 5dimes.
Georgia Tech passed just 10 times last week, with Justin Thomas completing five of those for a total of 80 passing yards. But the Yellow Jackets went to work on the ground, rushing 52 times in the game for 364 yards. Qua Searcy led the way with 91 yards on seven carries, and seven Tech players rushed at least three times in the game. Georgia Tech averaged seven yards per carry and had five TDs in the game.

Thomas has thrown just 25 passes on the season for 199 yards, but he has not thrown a pick and has a passer rating of 118.9. Thomas has rushed for 85 yards on 17 carries with a TD and a long run of 31 yards. Searcy leads the team in yardage (87) but has just nine attempts on the season, while there are four other Tech players with 13 or more carries, including Marcus Marshall’s 19 rushes for 82 yards and a TD. Georgia Tech has scored seven rushing TDs on the season, but has yet to throw for a TD. Kicker Harrison Butker is perfect on the season but has attempted just one field goal, a 40-yarder.
Vanderbilt rebounded with a Week 2 win over Middle Tennessee State University, winning 47-24. Week 1 saw Vandy fall 13-10 to South Carolina. Kyle Shurmur threw 15 of 28 for 113 yards and a TD last week, but it was Ralph Webb who really carried the Commodores. He rushed for 211 yards on 29 carries, averaging 7.3 yards per attempt and scoring two TDs.
Khari Blasingame rushed six times for 19 yards but had a pair of TDs. Shurmur was not effective on the ground, rushing twice but losing 13 yards on those two attempts. Vandy managed 113 passing yards on 15 attempts, but it is Webb that really accounted for the team’s dominance over MTSU. Darrius Sims did a great job on kick returns with three for 95 total yards including a long of 47-yards.

Webb is a 5’10” 202 pound junior who had 97 yards on 20 attempts in the Week 1 loss. He caught three passes against South Carolina for 28 yards, but he was negative-5 yards receiving in Week 2. Last season he rushed for 1,152 yards on 277 carries, getting 4.2 yards per attempt and scoring five TDs on the season. He looks to be in for a much bigger year in 2016-17, and the Commodores have groomed him for this. He rushed for 907 yards in 2014 as a freshman, but this is his first season that he may easily exceed five yards per attempt after being good for 4.25 the previous two seasons combined.
Shurmur is not the most effective QB with just a 46 percent completion ratio on 50 passes this season. His 3.72 yards per attempt are downright troubling, and Webb could be an effective pass option like he was in Week 1 with improvement from Shurmur. His passer rating is just 83.8, and no receiver has more than four catches on the season.
