Favre’s ankle surgery could be sign for QB’s return
It’s looking more and more like Brett Favre will be back for a 20th season in the NFL. The Vikings QB had arthroscopic ankle surgery Friday which would enable him to participate in the Vikings’ training camp in July. While Favre didn’t officially comment on his plans to return for another season, this strongly suggests that Favre will be back in purple and gold for the 2011 season.
Favre had scar tissue in his left ankle cleaned up Friday at the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Fla. The procedure generally requires a rehabilitation time of four to six weeks, which would allow Favre to attend the Vikings training camp. However, Vikings head coach Brad Childress didn’t rule out a late arrival should his QB decide to play another season. This would be comparable to Favre’s late arrival to the team in August of last year.
Kevin Boss (Giants TE) will have ankle surgery Monday
The New York Giants announced yesterday that their starting TE Kevin Boss will have arthroscopic ankle surgery Monday. The procedure will sideline him for four to six weeks. Boss injured his ankle in a Week 4 win over Kansas City. He missed the Giants’ game against Oakland the following week and dealt with the injury all year. Boss aggravated the injury during offseason work-outs last week.
Bears LB Nick Roach will likely miss the rest of minicamp
Chicago Bears LB Nick Roach, who was considered the early favorite to start on the strong side, wasn’t able to compete in minicamp drills Saturday. Roach had participated in all Bears off-season activities before starting to feel soreness in his hamstring. Roach will likely miss the rest of the team’s minicamp.
Welker runs without pain Wes Welker ran without pain Saturday.
The Patriots wide receiver, who had surgery to repair his torn ACL on Feb. 2, worked out with kids at his youth football camp Saturday. He told ESPN that he doesn’t feel any pain in his left knee when he runs. Welker’s return would be important for the Patriots’ offense. He tore his ACL in the team’s final regular season game of the 2009 season and was replaced by rookie WR Julian Edelmann. While Edelmann surprised with six receptions for 44 yards and two touchdowns in New England’s 33-14 loss to Baltimore in the wild card round, Welker is an essential part of Bill Belichick’s offense.
Judge rules that suspensions for Vikings Williams’ Wall stay on hold.
A judge in Minnesota ruled Friday that the four game suspensions the NFL issued against Vikings DTs Kevin and Pat Williams will stay on hold in case they appeal. The NFL first wanted to issue suspensions in 2008 due to breach of its anti-drug policy when the Williamses tested positive for a banned substance that was an ingredient of the weight-loss supplement they were taking. Both players sued and their suspensions were put on hold. It was ruled earlier this month that the league was allowed to suspend the DTs, which would keep them from participating in the Vikings first four games. Minnesota opens the season at New Orleans, and then plays two straight home games against Miami and Detroit before having an early BYE in week four. They travel to New York to face the Jets for their fourth game of the season.
Manumaleuna won’t be ready to work out until training camp.
Chicago Bears tight end Brandon Manumaleuna underwent minor knee surgery that kept him from participating in the team’s minicamp. He will also miss all of the OTAs, but should be ready to fully take part in the Bear’s training camp. Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark took reps with the first team in Manumaleuna’s absence.
Minor hip surgery will bench Dolphins’ Marshall until training camp.
The Miami Dolphins will have to wait a while to show off their shiny new toy at wide receiver. Brandon Marshall, who joined the team in the offseason, underwent minor hip surgery on his right hip a few weeks ago. He wasn’t able to participate in the team’s minicamp and won’t be ready to go till at least the start of training camp. While Marshall hasn’t been able to run routes, he has been playing catch ever since the surgery. He will be able to working out throwing and catching all the way through training camp.
Losman signs one-year deal with Seahawks
Former Bills QB J.P. Losman signed a $630,000 one year deal wit the Seattle Seahawks Tuesday. Losman made one appearance for the Oakland Raiders last season, throwing one pass – an incompletion for a 39.6 QB rating. The Raiders signed Losman after Brad Gradkowski was hurt in a 34-13 loss to the Washington Redskins.
Losman led the Las Vegas Locomotives to the inaugural UFL league championship in 2009. He passed for 1,386 yards and completed 62.1 percent of his passes with the Locos. He threw nine TD passes ad only two interceptions in seven games.
