SMU is 3-5 on the season and lost last week at Cincinnati 28-25, but things are expected to get better as it plays host to a winless UConn team. College football oddsmakers at Bovada find the Mustangs to be 15-point favorites over the Huskies.
SMU has done most of its damage offensively this year via the pass. The team ranks 5th in pass yardage per game (383.5) and generates 31.8 points per game. Problematically, the defense allows 40.3 points per game, ranking among the worst in the nation (118th). SMU has allowed 40 or more points in five of its eight contests and even a team like UConn could put some numbers up against the Mustangs “D.”
Garrett Gilbert is having a sensational season at QB for SMU. He has 3,037 yards on 66 percent passing with 17 TDs to just six interceptions. Gilbert has also rushed for 238 yards, which leads all the backs on the team. Traylon Shead has managed just 3.9 yards per carry and has the most rushing touchdowns (three) outside of Gilbert’s six.
Chandler Whitmer was a terrible disappointment this season for UConn and the team switched to freshman Tim Boyle four weeks ago. Boyle has been even worse than Whitmer and has thrown eight interceptions while failing to reach the end zone. His 43.9 percent completion ratio ranks far behind Whitmer’s 55 percent, but UConn has been a disaster and the pass protection has been poor all season.
