The 2007- 2008 NFL season is approaching quickly. It’ll all start on September 6 when the New Orleans Saints go to Indianapolis to play the World Champ Colts. So needless to say, coaches are very busy making decisions and for the staff of the Kansas City Chiefs it was a big one—who will man the QB spot?
Herm Edwards has decided to go with 10-year back-up Damon Huard. Huard, who is 34 years old, has played for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots, backing up Dan Marino for the Fins and then Tom Brady for the Pats. The QB has played in the NFL for six seasons, from 1998- 2003 and in 2006. He was with the Chief’s organization in 2004 and 2005 but did not play.
Last year, he came in for an injured Trent Green and played in 10 games, going 148 for 244 (60.7% COMP) and throwing 11 TDs and one INT. He was very impressive in that stint because he managed to hold the team together, taking control and throwing for 1,684 yards and racking up the second-best QB rating in the league. His rating of 98.0 was only second to Peyton Manning’s 101.0. Huard was 5- 3 overall in 2006.
As Brady’s backup for two years, he appeared in four games and threw one pass, which was incomplete. In 1999, he played the most he ever has in one season when he appeared in 16 games for the Dolphins, hitting 57.9% of his tosses, while throwing eight touchdowns and four interceptions.
Huard beat out second-year man Brodie Croyle, who looks to be the future of the franchise. Last season with the Chiefs, Croyle played a few snaps in two games. He threw the ball seven times, completing three and tossing two interceptions. In the present pre-season, Croyle, a former Crimson Tide signal caller, threw interceptions in each of his first three games. On Thursday night against the Saints, Croyle was five of 17 for 45 yards. The Chiefs lost 30- 7 with Huard on the bench nursing a calf injury.
Chiefs’ head coach Edwards believes that Huard gives them the best chance to win and with the gigantic contract extension that star RB Larry Johnson just signed, a stable QB along with one of the best runners in the NFL should make Kansas City a division contender.
Kansas City QB Trent Green, who was knocked out for a major part of the season in 2006 with a concussion, signed with the Dolphins a few months ago and was just named their starting QB. In week two of the preseason, The Fins beat the Chiefs 11- 10. They will not meet in the regular season this year.
