Baltimore has won five games in a row, including a 9-2 victory over Kansas City as -117 road favorites Monday, while going OVER the betting total of 9.  The Orioles are now a season-high 14 games over .500 on the season—a mark the club didn’t hit until Aug. 28 last year.  “There’s always been a sense of urgency,” commented Orioles manager Buck Showalter.  “They are going to seize every moment, and we will see how it works out.”  Baltimore is 8-7 on the road with a money line of -100 to -125 this season, with the OVER going 8-7 in that situation.

Orioles starting pitcher Jason Hammel (7-6, 5.24 ERA) suffered a 7-3 home loss to the Toronto Blue Jays last time out, as he allowed six runs and 10 hits over six frames.  The right-hander is 6-2 with a 4.25 ERA in 11 road outings, surrendering 10 home runs in 65.2 combined innings.  In seven career games (four starts) versus the Royals, Hammel is 1-2 with a 5.11 ERA, including an 8-2 home victory on May 25 of last season.

Kansas City has scored just three combined runs in dropping its last two contests, as the club dropped just its ninth game by five or more runs during the 2013 campaign.  “It was a clunker,” stated Royals manager Ned Yost.  “It was one of those games.”  The Royals are now eight games back of the first-place Detroit Tigers in the AL Central standings.  Kansas City is 27-43 in July the last two-plus seasons, with the OVER going 33-32-5 in that situation.

Royals starting pitcher Bruce Chen (3-0, 2.04 ERA) didn’t earn a decision in a 3-0 road loss to the Cleveland Indians last time out, as the allowed just a single hit over six shutout innings.  The left-hander is 1-0 with a 3.20 ERA in 11 relief appearances at home, with opposing batters hitting .291 against him.  In seven career games (six starts) versus the Orioles, Chen has tallied a losing 2-3 record and 5.18 ERA, issuing 16 walks and striking out 24 batters in 33 combined frames.

Sports bettors will likely back the Royals due to their 5-0 record in their last five games as a favorite.
