Now that the first series of the season is out of the way in baseball, we have our first chance to look at what we have seen so far and which players have done things that we like. On guy who really jumps out on that front is Vernon Wells. The Toronto slugger is talented – MVP talented – but there is a disconnect somewhere near where his brain meets his body, and he has never really been able to capitalize on what he is capable of. So far this year, though, he’s on fire – four home runs in three games, and in just 10 at-bats he has six hits and seven RBIs. With guys like Adam Lind and Travis Snyder in town Wells doesn’t have to be the only big bat for the Jays, and expectations aren’t very high for the team, so maybe he’s finally in a situation where he can have the massive year he is capable of. He’ll be worth watching.
A DA has announced that he will reveal his decision on the Roethlisberger case on Monday. That means that it is going to be a long, sleepless weekend for everyone involved with the Steelers and NFL football betting. This is a ridiculously melodramatic way for the DA to handle it, but that doesn’t make it any less of a story. If he does get charged then the implications could be massive for the team – and on the draft and the rest of free agency. If there is the slightest chance of real punishment in this one then the team will have to have a good option in place in case things go badly – and they just don’t have that right now. Even if he gets off with nothing there is a good argument to be made that they should be looking elsewhere anyway. Big Ben is a solid quarterback, but he’s also clearly a total moron with a total inability to stay out of trouble, and it may be better to avoid the distractions and possible setbacks of having him around. I’m not sure I’d trade him if I was in charge, but I’d sure think about it. Expect the NFL gambling odds on week 1’s contest to be pulled off the board due to possible suspension of big ben.
