Many were saying Oregon was far too good to be a No. 12 seed. They substantiated that talk by posting a 68-55 victory over Marcus Smart and Oklahoma State, and they’ll square off against a tough Saint Louis team that NCAA basketball oddsmakers set as four point favorites.
Despite a cold 3-of-12 shooting performance from E.J. Singler, the Ducks had four players in double figure scoring, led by Damyean Dotson’s 17 points. Dotson hit three of Oregon’s eight three pointers in the game, as the Ducks hit 36 percent from behind the arc. The Ducks led by 11 at the half, and held Marcus Smart and Markel Brown to 11-of-29 shooting.
Singler leads the Ducks in scoring at 11.5 points per game, and Carlos Emory and Damyean Dotson both average 11 per game as well. The Ducks use a 7/8-man rotation, with seven players averaging more than 20 minutes per game.
The Saint Louis Billikens are one of five A-10 teams to have experienced success thus far. The Billikens have won five straight games, including a 62-56 victory over then-No. 25 VCU. They’ve also won 17 of their last 18 games, which featured two victories over the Butler Bulldogs.
SLU is led by a trio of double digit scorers: Dwayne Evans (14 points per game), Cody Ellis (10.3) and Kwamain Mitchell (10.3). Evans, a 6’5″ junior forward, also leads the team in rebounding with 7.7 boards per contest. Over his last five games, he’s averaging 21 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Evans’ play is instrumental in getting the Billikens past this Ducks team today. When Evans has a double-double, the Billikens are 6-0.
