Friday Notes

News of note as we head into an uncharacteristically slow weekend of sporting action:

Minnesota Vikings’ fans are not going to be happy. The NFL has admitted today that the play in which Favre hurt his ankle in the third quarter was called incorrectly. Favre threw an interception on the play, though New Orleans didn’t score on the subsequent play. The league has now said that the play should have resulted in a penalty because Favre was hit from behind, and that the Vikings should have had a first down on the New Orleans 19. At the very least, then, they would have wound up with a field goal, and that would have made all the difference. Though I don’t disagree with what the league said, I really have to wonder why they bother saying anything now – unless they have interest in driving Minnesota fans insane.

Dwight Freeney has now missed two practices because of ankle issues. The team insists he will be fine for the Super Bowl, but this one is going to be one to watch.

I was up late last night doing some work, and I ended up watching Roger Federer’s Aussie Open semifinal. The guy is a beast. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had been red hot throughout the tournament, but Federer made him look absolutely ridiculous. Federer didn’t even break a sweat – it was as close to perfect as a guy can play. Andy Murray has been playing very well himself, but I just don’t see how he can handle Federer here.

A couple of quick thoughts on the NBA roster announced today. I was very happy to see Gerald Wallace and Zach Randolph get the recognition they deserve. They both play for teams that don’t get a lot of attention, but both teams are playing surprisingly well, and these guys are a big part of it in each case. I understand that Memphis probably couldn’t justify two picks, but I really think that Pau Gasol got the spot that his brother Marc deserved. I also think that Chris Kaman was robbed.
