Tennessee has lost six of their last seven games, with a lone win over Troy on November 3rd. This week could prove to be a bit different, according to college football oddsmakers, as they enter the game as 13 point favorites over Kentucky Wildcats team that has struggled even more significantly in front of a dwindling fan base in Lexington.
Fortunately (?) for the Wildcats, they will be able to avoid the embarrassment of losing yet another home game, as they head to Tennessee to take on the Vols in a rivalry game with no real implications whatsoever beyond salvaging an otherwise lost season for the two struggling SEC schools. Neither team has won a conference game yet, so this battle of the cellar dwellers will provide some relief.
It’s even more disappointing perhaps for the Vols, as they began the season in nice fashion, with wins over NC State and Georgia State. They even stayed “relatively” close to then-No. 18 Florida, losing 37-20 in a game they would probably lose by 40 now, in light of how the teams have developed as the season went on.
That digression aside, the Vols just can’t play defense. They’re still scoring (36.1 per game), but are giving up nearly the most points in the nation (37.4), ranking 113th in team defense.
Their passing has been what has almost kept them relevant. The Vols average 317 yards per game behind the strength of quarterback Tyler Bray. Bray, a 6’6″ junior, is having his finest season so far at Tennessee, and has thrown for 3,319 yards while posting a QB rating of 144.3
But what it is all worth without some defense? They may not have much of a problem with the Wildcats, who rank 84th in the nation in points scored, averaging 30 points per game, while ranking near the bottom in both passing yards (170 per game) and rushing hards (136 per game).
