Maryland Week One Recap:
Maryland snuck out of College Park to win a 7-6 game over William & Mary last week. Justus Pickett ran the game tying TD in with 9:52 remaining in the court quarter and place kicker Brad Craddock added the extra point to give the Terrapins the edge.
Despite winning the game, Maryland committed four turnovers and missed a short field goal.
A lot of this is because they are starting a freshman QB. Perry Hills did OK, throwing for 145 yards on 16 of 24 passing, but he still threw three interceptions. Three of the Maryland turnovers were in the first quarter.
The best drive came in the mid second quarter when Hills pushed the Terrapins 63 yards in 12 plays, getting to a third-and-6 at the William & Mary 7-yard-line. Hills then missed a wide open Devonte Campbell, failing to seal off a TD on the drive. It was then that Craddock missed the 25 yard field goal.
The Terrapins must convert on such plays to have any chance of beating a Temple team that college football oddsmakers have made a 10 point favorite.
Temple Week One Recap:
Temple took care of business against Villanova last week, winning 41-10. Matt Brown ran for 141 yards and Chris Coyer also had a TD passing and rushing, marking a triumphant return for the Owls to a conference they were kicked out of eight years ago.
The game, billed as the “Mayor’s Cup,” was the third straight victory for the Owls in this matchup.
“We executed very well the first drive and made a lot of really good reads, then we had some hiccups,” Coyer said.
The defense made up for those hiccups, as a Vaughn Carraway interception led to a 58 yard score that put Temple up 14-3 and it only got better as two plays later another turnover set up a 19 yard Coyer TD run that set the score at 21-3.
There was no looking back at that point and the Owls went on to continue to dominate ‘Nova, scoring 21 points in the second quarter for a 28-10 lead at the half. They didn’t allow ‘Nova to score in the second half, while managing 13 points of their own.
The 301 rushing yards ranks Temple 12th in the nation and the 10 points allowed ranks them 18th.
