Monday Notes

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at Florida State the last couple of days. Word is that Bobby Bowden is going to retire tomorrow. I have absolutely no doubt that he is doing the right thing – he has no business coaching anymore. That being said, I wasn’t expecting him to go easily. It will be very interesting to see what happens with this team next year. We have heard for a long time about how good Jimbo Fisher is, but now he has no safety net and no one to blame. I don’t like anything about the Seminoles, but the sport is unquestionably better when they are an elite squad.

Allen Iverson spent two hours in Dallas today talking to the Sixers. I’ve been thinking about this move, and I like it a lot. Iverson is a shadow of his former self and a risk of being a big distraction, but it’s a worthwhile risk in this case in my mind. Iverson was at his best when he was in Philly and he was wildly popular, so he’ll be motivated and the fans will be fired up by the move. Philly certainly needs an offensive boost, and this would be a great and appropriate way for Iverson to end his career. I think it will happen, and I think it will work out.

I really don’t get NBA coaching decisions. I obviously have no problem with the Nets’ decision to fire Lawrence Frank – you can’t go 0-16 and keep your job for long. I just don’t get why teams ditch a coach and replace them with a guy who isn’t positioned to succeed. The Hornets did it when they ditched a coach and tabbed their GM, who doesn’t have head coaching experience in the NBA, as the replacement. Now it appears that New Jersey has done the same thing. They have reportedly picked GM Kiki Vandeweghe as the head coach for the rest of the year. His only coaching experience was a brief stint as an assistant in Dallas. I just don’t get it. The Nets have copied the Hornets in another way as well. New Orleans brought in a washed up coach – Tim Floyd – to be an assistant to help out with the coaching duties. New Jersey is reportedly bringing in Del Harris as the shadow. Silly.

It’s only halftime in the Monday night game, but I really can’t believe what I have seen so far. Drew Brees is playing as good as a quarterback can play. He’s 11 of 13 for 229 yards and three touchdowns. That’s a perfect quarterback rating if you care about such things. He is focused and scary good. I knew that he was going to be fired up for this game, but this goes far beyond reasonable expectations. Impressive.
