Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are the hottest team in baseball

Chicago suffered a 4-2 setback on the road to Detroit on Friday night, and will begin today’s action just a half-game up in the divisional standings.  The White Sox have lost four of their last five games, moving their record to 3-5 on this 10-game road trip to open up the second half of the season.  “They are playing well and have made a nice run,” stated White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy.  Chicago is 9-5 on the road with a money line of -100 to -125, with the “under” going 8-6 in that situation.

White Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale (11-2, 2.11 ERA) has won his last eight decisions, including a 2-1 road win over the Kansas City Royals last time out, allowing one run and 10 hits over eight frames.  The left-hander is 6-0 with a 2.60 ERA in nine road outings (eight starts), issuing 14 walks and striking out 59 batters in 55.1 combined innings.  In 11 career games (one start) versus the Tigers, Sale has registered an even 1-1 record and 3.20 ERA, including a 1-0 mark and 1.69 ERA in three relief appearances at this ballpark.

Detroit is ready to take control of this division and hopes to use the momentum that its ace provided in the series opener, as the club has won three straight and 11 of 13.  “It’s great for your fans,” stated Tigers manager Jim Leyland about the team’s recent play.  The Tigers continue to get timely hits at the plate, entering the three-game set leading the majors with a .295 average with runners in scoring position.  Outfielder Delmon Young is one of the key players in the lineup, batting .340 and knocking in 44 runs in 71 career games against the White Sox.  Detroit is 3-8 at home when the total is 8 to 8.5.

Tigers starting pitcher Rick Porcello (6-5, 4.66 ERA) has led the club to four consecutive wins when he takes the mound, as he didn’t factor into the decision of an 8-6 home win over the Los Angeles Angels last time out.  The right-hander is 2-3 with a 5.20 ERA in 10 home outings, with opposing hitters batting .330 against him.  In nine career starts versus the White Sox, Porcello has garnered an even 4-4 record and 5.50 ERA, including a 3-1 home win on May 6.

Sports bettors will likely back the White Sox due to their 22-8 mark on Saturdays, while the Tigers are 0-7 in their last seven games as a home underdog of +110 to +150.
