Baltimore dropped seven of its last 10 contests, but managed to open up this series with an 8-6 extra-innings victory on Tuesday night.  The Orioles are now 4-0 this year against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, while winning seven of their last eight overall inside the famed venue.  “I try not to get too high or too low, but that’s one of our better wins of the year,” stated Orioles manager Buck Showalter.  It was certainly a break-out game for an offense that scored just 20 runs in its previous eight games.  Baltimore is 16-14 against division opponents this season.

Orioles starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen (4-2, 3.75 ERA) has watched the club drop his last three outings, with the offense managing to score just six runs over that span.  He was handed a 5-0 road loss to the Tampa Bay Rays last time out, giving up five runs and five hits over 5.2 frames.  The left-hander has registered a 1-2 record and 5.74 ERA in five road outings, issuing 15 walks and striking out 23 in 26.2 combined innings.  Chen didn’t factor into the decision of a 6-4 road win over the Red Sox in his only career start against them on May 4, surrendering four runs (three earned) and five hits over five innings.

Boston is in danger of losing just its second series since May 10, but the team is definitely a candidate to bounce back due to its 9-4 record in its last 13 home games.  The Red Sox have outscored opponents by a 72-47 margin over that span.  Second baseman Dustin Pedroia returned to the lineup on Tuesday night, going 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly, as he missed the previous six games with a thumb injury.  Boston is 3-4 as a home favorite of -150 to -175 this season, with the “under” going 5-2 in those contests.

Red Sox starting pitcher Josh Beckett (4-5, 4.26 ERA) was handed his first loss since May 10 last time out, suffering a 7-3 home setback to the Detroit Tigers, giving up four runs and a season-high 10 hits over seven innings.  The right-hander is 2-3 with a 3.99 ERA in six home starts, as opponents are hitting .252 against him.  In 18 career starts versus the Orioles, Beckett has compiled a 7-5 record and 4.25 ERA, including a 1-2 mark and 7.03 ERA in four games last year.

Bettors will likely back the Orioles due to their 8-3 record against right-handers on the road, while the Red Sox are 4-11 at home against winning teams.
