MLB Betting Odds: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox

The Detroit Tigers (23-25) and Boston Red Sox (24-24) will continue a four-game American League series on Tuesday night at Fenway Park in Boston, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10 ET on ESPN

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox

Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in five road starts this year

Detroit suffered a 7-4 loss to Boston on Monday afternoon, missing out on a chance to climb back to .500 after capturing three straight wins against the Minnesota Twins over the weekend.  “It almost seems like we’re battling to get out of this funk that we’re in and we still can’t get a break,” stated Tigers manager Jim Leyland after the game.  The Tigers are 10-20 against the Red Sox since the start of the 2008 campaign, while putting together a 12-13 mark on the road this season.  Detroit is 17-17 when facing right-handed starters and the “under” is 18-15 in those contests.

Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander (5-2, 2.15 ERA) is coming off a 2-1 road loss to the Cleveland Indians, giving up two runs and six hits over eight frames.  The right-hander will be making his sixth road start, posting a 3-1 record and 3.00 ERA, while allowing four home runs in 36 frames.  In eight career starts versus the Red Sox, Verlander has gone 3-2 with a 2.78 ERA, including a 2-1 mark and 3.19 ERA in five outings at this ball park.

Boston has dropped all five games that would give it the opportunity to move above .500 this season, as it will look to end that streak without starting second baseman Dustin Pedroia in the lineup.  The former AL MVP left the first game of the series after diving for a ground ball in the fifth inning.  The Red Sox have managed to hit .302 and score 21 runs during their current five-game home winning streak over the Tigers, but the club has alternated wins and losses over its last seven games.  Boston is 3-4 as a home underdog of +125 to +150 over the past two-plus seasons.

Red Sox starting pitcher Daniel Bard (4-5, 4.69 ERA) has watched the club alternate wins and losses over his last four outings, picking up a 6-5 road win over the Baltimore Orioles last time out, allowing two runs and five hits over 5.1 innings.  The right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA in three home starts, issuing 13 walks and collecting just 10 strike outs in 18 frames.  In six career relief appearances versus the Tigers, Bard has gone 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA, allowing opponents to hit .174 against him.

Bettors will likely back the Red Sox due to their 8-3 record versus right-handed starters, while the Tigers are 6-10 when the total is 8 to 8.5.
