Detroit point guard, Chauncey Billups has exercised the opt out clause in his contract, which means he has terminated his contract with the Pistons a year early. This year, Billups played in 70 games, averaging 17.0 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 7.2 APG and 1.2 SPG. He shot 43% from the floor, 35% from downtown and 88% from the free throw line. The 30 year old has played 10 seasons in the NBA, playing for Boston, Toronto, Denver, Minnesota and Detroit. He’s been a member of the Pistons since the 2002- 2003 season.
By exercising his opt out clause, Billups becomes an unrestricted free agent, which means he can talk with any team that’s interested in him, including the Pistons. According to Billups’ agent Andy Miller, the point guard’s first choice is to resign with the Pistons. Billups, one of the preeminent point guards in the NBA, is looking for a new long-term deal.
For Billups, the market is thin despite his talent. The problem for the superstar is that most teams don’t have room in their salary cap and so cannot afford him. Milwaukee and Memphis are both in the hunt for a quality and both have cap space but probably not enough to outbid Detroit.
Look for Billups to get long-term security and more than $6.8 million per year.
