Florida travels to New Jersey Thursday night to face the 7-5 Rutgers Scarlet Knights, coached by Mike Rice. It one last huge non-conference test before the Scarlet Knights begin the daunting Big East schedule. This game is significant for another reason, as Florida guard Nelson Rosario returns to Rutgers after transferring a couple of seasons ago. Rosario was a star player for the Knights for two seasons scoring over 1,000 points, and even making theĀ Big East All-Freshman team. However, he is the 8th or 9th player in the rotation for the deep Gators. He missed the last two games with back spasms but was cleared to play for this game. The New Jersey native couldn’t handle the pressure of being Rutgers’ savior to try and make a moribund program relevant in the very strong Big East.
Rutgers has wins over Dartmouth, Hampton, Monmouth, Stony Brook, and last Thursday over NJIT 77-53. The Scarlet Knights have losses to Miami-Florida, Illinois St, Richmond, LSU, and Princeton. Rutgers has won 3 games in a row since the Princeton loss. Florida leads the series 4-1 against Rutgers, but the two teams have never met in Piscataway. The Gators won the last meeting 73-58 in 2009 in a tournament in Atlantic City.

Rutgers hasn’t covered yet this season, and the Knights haven’t faced a team as talented as the Gators. The only chance Rutgers has to win is to slow down the quick and speedy Gators and force them into the half court offense. It won’t be easy as the Gators are 5th in the nation in scoring with almost 90 points a game. Florida should win this easily and cover the 9 1/2 point spread.
