New York looks to win its first game following a bye week under current head coach Rex Ryan, coming off a 27-21 win over the San Diego Chargers as one-point home underdogs. “We have to do something about that trend,” commented Ryan. The Jets have still been out-gained in three of their last four games, but that’s also the case for the Bills coming into this AFC East tilt. The team ranks third in the NFL and second in the AFC with 16 takeaways, with cornerback Darrelle Revis tied for third in the league with four interceptions. New York is 0-3 ATS on the road this season and the ‘over’ is 18-5 in that situation the last two-plus years.
The Jets swept the season series last season, scoring 38 points in each of the contests, while totaling 549 rushing yards. New York’s defense is still its strength, limiting opposing quarterbacks to a 60.5 passer rating. On the offensive side, quarterback Mark Sanchez will likely be forced to win the game, as he’s completed just 45.6 percent of his passes against the Buffalo Bills in his career.
Buffalo shares the division lead with the New England Patriots and would like to gain an advantage over another AFC East rival on Sunday. “This week is huge,” commented George Wilson. “We go back into the division for what we call two-fers. By beating a division opponent you essentially go up on them two games.” The Bills are coming off a solid performance in tallying a 23-0 shutout win over the Washington Redskins as four-point favorites in a game played inside the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Buffalo is 6-6 ATS versus divisional foes the last two-plus years and the team failed to cover its only try as home favorites of a field goal or less in the same span.
The Bills haven’t won their first five home games since the 1995 campaign and the defense will look to dominate another opponent. Buffalo limited Washington to just 178 yards and came away with nine sacks. The unit will be tested on the ground this week, especially with New York’s success when rushing the football in the two meetings a year ago, while also ranking 20th in the NFL in surrendering 120.0 yards rushing per contest.
Bettors will likely back the Jets due to their 8-1 ATS mark as a road underdog of three points or less, while the Bills are 1-4 ATS when playing at home in this series.
