The Florida Gators have done what very few NCAA basketball teams have ever been able to do—repeat as champs. State was simply out-battled by the Gators. It had to be a humbling experience for Ron Lewis and the Ohio State Buckeyes, who also lost in December to Florida. That time it was by 26 points. For Ohio State freshman center Greg Oden had a fine game, scoring a double-double (25 PTS, 12 RBS) in points and rebounds. For Florida it was Al Horford, the junior forward/center, who had the double-double (18 PTS. 12 RBS).
Ohio State was undone by its lack of three-point shooting, hitting only 3 of 21 from downtown. With 34 seconds left, the Gators were 12-points ahead.
Ron Lewis, who started a minor controversy today by calling the Gators merely “good was 0 for 3 from the three-point mark and 6 of 13 from the floor, scoring 12-points.
Florida’s Lee Humphrey hit 4 three-pointers, while Corey Brewer and Taurean Green put in three each from downtown. The Gators hit 55.6% from the three-point mark to the Buckeyes 17.4%, out scoring them 30 to 12. They were 22 of 25 (88%) from the free throw line, while the Buckeyes went 11- 17 (64.7%). Florida captured 38 rebounds to Ohio State’s 27.
No SEC team has gone back-to-back since 1948- 49. It’s been 15 years since any college team has repeated, with the last one being the Duke Blue Devils. The Gators have won both the NCAA Championship in basketball and football this year.
