Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia has been the talk of the National Football League since the end of the lockout, especially after the free agent signing of All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who will join Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Asante Samuel to form one of the best secondaries in the league.
Samuel has been voicing his displeasure with the recent acquisitions due to it possibly cutting into his contributions, as he has an NFL-best 36 interceptions over the last five years.
Quarterback Michael Vick has plenty of explosive weapons on the offensive end, as wide receiver Desean Jackson has reported to camp despite being unhappy about his current contract. The Eagles were extremely balanced under Andy Reid’s play calling a year ago, ranking ninth and fifth respectively in passing and rushing offense.
Dallas Cowboys
Dallas begins its first full year under head coach Jason Garrett, posting a 5-3 record in the final eight games of the 2010 season. The Cowboys will also have starting quarterback Tony Romo back after missing most of the year with a broken clavicle.
Owner Jerry Jones is already sparking a rivalry within the division, as he’s quick to point out that Philadelphia is not a shoe-in to win the Super Bowl. This is something that his new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has already voiced publicly.
Garrett has been stressing toughness in camp, something that many experts applaud due to a public perception of the team being soft. The Cowboys want to be a physical force that opponents don’t want to play any given week.
New York Giants
New York ranked in the top 10 in the four major offensive categories last year, but managed to finish the season 10-6 and was unable to reach the playoffs. The Giants have also been a disappointment for bettors, posting a 13-22 ATS mark the last two years.
The lines maker has obviously caught up with the team due to its 26-11 ATS mark during the 2007-08 campaigns. Head coach Tom Coughlin’s squad is still a solid bet as a road favorite, posting winning ATS marks in four consecutive seasons.
New York still has a core group of solid offensive players led by quarterback Eli Manning and both starting running backs from a year ago. It will be interesting to see if the wide receiving core can continue to grow, led by Hakeem Nicks on the outside.
Washington Redskins
Washington has ended its one-year experiment with veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb and will push into the 2011 campaign with Rex Grossman as the starter. He played in four games and threw for 884 yards and seven touchdowns a year ago.
Life in the nation’s capitol hasn’t been pretty for head coach Mike Shanahan, posting a 6-10 SU record, but bettors were pleased with the squad’s 8-5-3 ATS performance. Many league insiders suspect that the Redskins could end up with the league’s worst record and targeting Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.
Fixing problems in the rushing game is a major priority, as the unit ranked 30th in gaining just 91.3 yards a game, while the defense was awful against the pass, giving up 261.7 yards a contest.
