It’s a shame that no one (full disclosure – myself included) cares about women’s basketball, because what UConn finished off last night was truly impressive. They thumped Louisville in the championship game to cut down the nets. More impressively, they weren’t beaten all year. I know that women’s basketball is more top heavy than men’s is, but it still seems incredible to me that a team can go all the way without faltering. Never mind that UConn is always about that good. This accomplishment is almost enough to make me want to start watching women’s basketball. Not quite, but almost.
Bad news for the Diamondbacks. Brandon Webb experienced stiffness in his throwing shoulder in his opening day start, and he is going to skip his next start. At least. That’s even more concerning given what the outing looked like – in a word, ugly. Webb had no control, his sinker, usually his biggest weapon, wasn’t sinking, and he got yanked after four innings after having allowed six runs. The D-Backs don’t have a lot of margin for error when it comes to pitching this year, so it would be a pretty serious problem if this turns out to be anything more than just an early season tweaked muscle or something.
It’s going to be very interesting to watch the Lakers down the stretch. Andrew Bynum is reportedly returning to action tomorrow, and he is going to immediately bump Lamar Odom from the starting lineup. There is little doubt in the long run that the team is better with Bynum starting than they are with Odom out of position, but things are working reasonably well for the team right now, and this is a significant move that could disrupt the team right before the playoffs. I doubt Phil Jackson would make the move if he didn’t think Bynum was ready to contribute, but this could create all sorts of complications and confusion if he isn’t ready for primetime right away. This is especially concerning because the first round matchup against Dallas or Utah won’t be the cake walk that the first round is supposed to be for top seeds.
Serena Williams was upset by the 95th ranked player in the world in the first round of a tournament in Spain today, and she lost the third set 6-1 despite reportedly not facing health issues. That’s such a typical Williams move. Imagine how good these two could be if they cared about more than four tournaments. As good as she and her sister are, you can’t help but think about the talent they have wasted. If either of the sisters had half the drive of Tiger or Kobe then no one else would have won a tournament in the last decade.
