San Diego Chargers
San Diego missed the playoffs despite finishing the 2010 season with a 9-7 record and the league’s second-ranked passing offense and top-ranked passing defense. The Chargers must focus on getting out of the gate quickly, as the team started last year with a 2-5 mark.
Quarterback Philip Rivers is one of the elite NFL players and is coming off a career year in passing for 4,710 yards and a 66 percent completion percentage. A key for the offense this year is getting a ground game established, as it’s hard to imagine Rivers throwing 541 passes like he did a year ago.
Playing the Chargers as a home favorite was the only winning angle for bettors last year, as they finished 6-2 ATS in that situation.
Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City was undoubtedly the talk of the division last year, starting out the year with a 3-0 record and making the playoffs. The Chiefs were handed a 30-7 defeat in the Wild Card round and finished 9-8 against-the-spread.
Rushing dominance at home was a catalyst in the team’s overall performance, gaining a league-high 1,463 rushing yards, which happens to be the third-highest mark in franchise history.
Quarterback Matt Cassel returns for his third season and has some major weapons offensively, including a pair of Pro Bowl selections in running back Jamaal Charles and Dwyane Bowe.
Oakland Raiders
Oakland finished the 2010 regular season with an 8-8 SU record and 9-7 ATS mark, but decided to go in another direction by firing head coach Tom Cable and promoting last year’s offensive coordinator Hue Jackson to the top spot.
The Raiders will be without star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who has signed a free agency contract to play with the Philadelphia Eagles. That has left plenty of money around to sign free agents and continue the growth of home-grown talent within the organization.
Quarterback Jason Campbell has some weapons at his disposal on the offensive end, including wide receiver Jacoby Ford and running back Darren McFadden. The Raiders were second in the NFL in averaging 155.9 rushing yards a game last year.
Denver Broncos
Denver has recently been the most talked about team in the league due to its quarterback situation, as Kyle Orton is expected to be the opening week starter against Oakland on Sept. 12.
The commotion has been caused due to backup Tim Tebow’s popularity within the community, but a media backlash has been occurring during camp. Many believe the organization made a major mistake in drafting the signal caller out of Florida.
It’s clear that the squad has a lot to figure out over the next few weeks under new head coach John Fox, who is looking to start anew after seeing things deteriorate in Carolina. The team was 5-11 ATS last year and failed to cover three of five games as a home underdog.
