Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis won this division by two games last year, posting a 10-6 SU mark (8-7-1 ATS) and is the expected favorite to do so again.
Much of the discussion surrounding this team during the offseason was concentrated on quarterback Peyton Manning’s neck surgery, as he’s yet to return to the practice field due to rehab. He’s not expected to miss any regular season action.
The Colts open the season at Houston’s Reliant Stadium for a second consecutive year, seeking revenge from a disappointing 34-24 loss.
Houston Texans
Houston took a step back last year after posting a 9-7 record in 2009, falling four games below .500 in a season that many thought would be a major step forward. The Texans were also a disappointing 5-10-1 against-the-spread.
Plenty of offensive weapons are found on the roster, including wide receiver Andre Johnson, who is coming off a disappointing year, catching 86 balls for 1,216 yards in 13 games. He recorded 100-plus receptions in each of the previous two years.
The team’s success hinges on the defense, especially a secondary that ranked last in the NFL last year in giving up 267.5 yards a game.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville missed the playoffs last year due to three consecutive losses to end the season. The Jaguars did win money for backers over the course of the season, posting a 9-7 ATS record, which was much better than the 9-23 ATS mark the previous two years.
Problems in the secondary have plagued this team for three consecutive seasons, ranking 28th-or-worse in pass defense in each year over that span. Changes have finally been made, including the additions of Dawan Landry from Baltimore.
The main question as the team continues camp is the health of returning starting quarterback David Garrard, who has been nursing a back injury. The Jaguars are not in a hurry to rush rookie Blaine Gabbert into the role and would like him to learn on the sidelines this year.
Tennessee Titans
A new era begins in Tennessee for the first time since 1994, as former offensive line coach Mike Munchak takes over for Jeff Fisher. He will have 14 new members on the 19-man coaching staff for the 2011 season.
The Titans began the 2010 season with a 5-3 record heading into a Week 9 bye week, but dropped seven of eight games to end the year. Bettors have failed to win money on this squad the last two years, with a combined 14-17-1 ATS mark.
Matt Hasselbeck will take over the controls at quarterback after being signed as a free agent, bringing in plenty of experience in playing 12 previous seasons with Green Bay and Seattle.
The future resides squarely on the shoulders of rookie Jake Locker, who was selected with the eighth overall pick in the NFL draft, which was viewed as a surprising move by many league insiders.
