The Southern Conference basketball tournament tips off today with 3 games. Game 1 will pit # 8 seed Chattanooga vs. #9 seed Wofford slated for a 3:00 eastern time tip-off. The second game of the day will see #7 Western Carolina take on #10 Elon, at 5:30 eastern. The final game of the day will see #6 Georgia Southern versus the 11 seeded The Citadel at approximately 8:00. Davidson, Appalachian State, College of Charleston, UNC Greensboro and Furman will start play on Thursday as they earned byes in the opening round of the 2007 Southern Conference Tournament.due to their regular season records. Davidson is the defending 2006 Southern Tournament champion and once again one of the favorites to win the entry into the 2007 Mens basketball championship. Their main competition in grabbing the automatic birth will be the number 2 seed Appalachian State. App State beat Davidson the only time these 2 played in conference play, but had 3 other losses along the way finishing the league with a 13-3 mark good enough to win the North division. Davidson only had that aforementioned loss to Appalachian State and have been in the top 10 of the Maddux Sports Mid Major poll pretty much the entire season. The come into the weekly rankings as the 6th best mid major while App State is only 2 spots behind.
App State and Davidson are the clear class of the field but don’t sleep on the College of Charleston. The Cougars are playing very good basketball and could be a sleeper to knock off the giants. The tournament will be held at the North Charleston Coliseum, in Charleston, South Carolina.
As for the free basketball pick for the early game, look for these 2 teams to play a little more conservative and slow the game down. The under 137 in the Wofford/Tennessee Chat game looks like a solid bet and should be an easy winner.
