2006 Oklahoma State Cowboys Basketball Predictions

Sean Sutton starts his first year as a head coach of a NCAA basketball team. Well, sort of. Eddie Sutton, Sean’s dad, coached the Cowboys for 36 seasons. However, in 2004 son Sean was named head coach designate and during that time, slowly, he took over various responsibilities. Now he’s in complete command and things look hopeful for Oklahoma State.

Junior shooting guard JamesOn Curry (13.5 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 0.8 APG, 46.7 FG%, 75.5 FT%) fell into a sophomore slump last season. If he can revive the tremendous play he exhibited as a freshman, when he hit numerous clutch shots and hit 51% from the field in Big 12 play, this team will be in good stead. Point guards Jamaal Brown (5.5 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 3.1 APG, 34.1 FG%, 75.6 FT%), a senior, and Byron Eaton (7.8 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 3.2 APG, 45.9 FG%, 72.9 FT%), a sophomore, were turnover crazy in 2005 -06. They simply must do a better job when they’ve got the ball.

Forward/center Mario Boggan (14.8 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 1.0 APG, 58.1 FG%, 82.1 FT%) has been prone to fouls. If the senior can play more disciplined ball, he’ll be a major rebounding and scoring threat this season. Marcus Dove (3.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 1.9 APG, 65.1 FG%, 75.7 FT%), who has difficulty on offense, is a fine defender, while sophomore Kenny Cooper (2.0 PPG, 1.8 RPG, 0.3 APG, 48.1 FG%, 66.7 FT%) may put it all together this year, becoming an unstoppable center.

Sutton’s style includes intense pressure on defense and an up tempo offense. Run and gun doesn’t quite describe it, but it comes close. This is a young and talented team that offers a good mix of experience and untapped potential. They should do well in the conference.

Look for Sean Sutton to guide this team to the upper echelon of the Big 12 and a NCAA Tournament appearance. Scoring should not be a problem for the Cowboys, but they must also be able to closeout the close ones, which was something they could not do last season.
