2006 Georgetown Hoyas Basketball Preview
2006 Georgetown Hoyas Basketball Predictions
Last season was a breakout year for coach John Thompson III (23-10 overall, 10- 6 Big East) and the Hoyas. Not only did they finish fifth in their conference, but they also made it to the regional semi-finals, where they lost to the NCAA-Champs-to-be Florida 57- 53. Expect the same and more from a squad with experience, talent and depth.
Guard Ashanti Cook (10.2 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 2.5 APG) is gone and that means it’s time for Jonathan Wallace (7.9 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 3.2 APG, 44.3 FG%, 79.1 FT%) to step up. The sure-handed Wallace has started every game in college and should be a fine replacement for Cook at the point. Possible shooting guards could be Jessie Sapp (2.8 PPG, 1.9 RPG, 0.6 APG, 40.7 FG%, 75.0 FT%), Josh Thornton (1.7 PPG, 0.5 RPG, 0.0 APG, 42.9 FG%, 100 FT%) and freshman Jeremiah Rivers. Rivers, who is Doc Rivers’ son, has size and possesses the potential to start immediately.
Center Roy Hibbert (11.6 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 1.3 APG, 59.0 FG%, 72.3 FT%) enters his junior season needing to be more aggressive on the boards. Hibbert gained confidence down the stretch last season and has proven to take well to coaching. Junior forward Jeff Green (11.9 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 3.3 APG, 44.5 FG%, 62.4 FT%) can do it all. A creative scoring threat, he’s solid in the hole and from the perimeter. Either junior transfer Patrick Ewing or freshman Vernon Macklin will fill the other forward position. Ewing, like his famous dad, has size and tenacity and also brings experience, while Macklin was a McDonald’s All-American.
Thompson (110- 65 over 6 years) has developed a strong frontcourt and now must do the same with his backcourt. In a few short years, he’s managed to bring the Georgetown program back to prominence. Although Tompson lost three starters from last season, he’s developed a nucleus that can win.
With a fine group of returning juniors and sophomores, the Hoyas could be dominant in the Big East. Expect their bruising frontcourt players to play tough with every team on their schedule.
