2006 Depaul Blue Demons Basketball Predictions

The Blue Demons finished 14th in the Big East—out of the running for everything. They didn’t even go to the NIT. The good news is that four starters and nine of the team’s top-ten scorers are back, as is coach Jerry Wainwright (12- 15 overall, 5- 11 Big East) who now enters his second year with the team.

This team is rich with guards, returning three double-digit scorers. Senior guard Sammy Mejia (15.1 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 2.5 APG, 48.4 FG%, 66.9 FT%) brings a fine scoring spark and a penchant for defense. Junior swingman Karron Clarke (10.0 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 1.2 APG, 50.0 FG%, 75.5 FT%) has great shooting range but needs to be more consistent. Draelon Burns (11.6 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.6 APG, 39.5 FG%, 83.7 FT%) offers quick offense off the bench. Jabari Currie (5.1 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 2.8 APG, 36.8 FG%, 55.3 FT%) could also be a factor.

Sophomore forward Wilson Chandler (10.6 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.0 APG, 43.6 FG%, 66.7 FT%), who made the Big East’s All-Rookie team last year, is one of the best defenders in the conference. He’ll command the frontcourt. If there’s anything amiss here, it’s his lack of taking shots. He needs to be more aggressive putting the ball up. Senior Keith Butler, who sat out last season, is the team’s tenacious starting center. If Wesley Green (4.3 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 0.6 APG, 43.3 FG%, 66.7 FT%) can stay out of trouble, the center will be invaluable grabbing the rebound and targeting the outlet pass.

Wainwright (198- 159 over 12 years) worked hard last season to figure out the mix that would work. Wainwright’s system, which is complex, is one that involves every player. With some stability in the program, this should be a breakout season for this team.

De Paul has experienced and talented players, including many possible breakouts. Two important stats-- 94 percent of their points and 86 percent of their rebounds return from last year. Although the Blue Demons have a difficult schedule, look for them to finish in the NCAA money this season.
