Coach: Rich Rodriguez (5th year at West Virginia)
Team Name: Mountaineers
2004 Record: 8-4
2004 Big East Conference Record 4-2
2004 ATS Record: 4-7
Returning Starters: 8
Lost last years Big East Player of the Year Rasheed Marshall and now have to replace him at the quarterback position with 3 unproven successors that have not yet attempted a pass in College. Because of this there are big question marks in the throwing game with no proven quarterback and lack of talent at the wideout position. The strength of the Mountaineers offense will be at the running back position, as all of West Virginia tailbacks are stellar, with 3 viable options to carry the load.
The West Virginia defense is all right with the line and secondary the strong suit of the unit. The Mountaineers line backing core is a little thin, and head coach Rich Rodriguez stated that area is a concern. Even though they lost star corner Adam "packman" Jones, the secondary shouldn't lose a beat.
All in all the running game is good enough to overcome the
passing difficulties to get them back to a bowl game, but without
a balanced offensive attack the Mountaineers will not be able
to challenge the top 2 teams in the conference.
